For the last 8 months whenever I shut my 2007 BMW 328i Coupe off, a light would come on telling me that my battery was low on charge. If I listened to the radio with the engine off, within 1 or 2 minutes the car would automatically shut off my radio in an autonomous act of desperation to preserve enough cranking power for the next time I drove. My car continued to start, but the admonition had me preparing for the expense of a new battery, which in the case of my car, is expensive, around $200.

I recently brought my car in for an oil change and asked the friendly mechanic to check my battery, which he did. At the end of my service he handed me the results on a piece of paper (see picture 1). The reading showed that my battery is rated at 790 cold cranking amps (CCA), but was only putting out 401 CCA. And the graphic clearly showed it was time for a new battery. Given that he is an Interstate Battery salesperson, he certainly didn’t need to tell me about a cheap workaround, but he let me in on a secret, one that I had no idea about. He said I might want to buy a smart trickle charger and see if that charges the battery up. BRILLIANT!

I went home, immediately started researching smart chargers and how they work, and settled on this one from YonHan, mostly for two reasons: It was only $28.99, and it was capable of charging at 8 amps, which shortens the charging time to a few hours instead of the days that 1 amp chargers can take.

Also, It was “Smart”, that is it could tell whether your battery needs “De-sulphating”, a process that allows the battery to get back to near new condition and be more able to hold a good charge. This is accomplished in “Repair Mode”, a slow pulse charging technique that can take a day or up to a week depending on the condition of your battery.

At first I manually just put it in regular 8 amp mode and within 4 hours my battery was cranking at about 13 volts and the low battery light was no longer coming on.

I then decided to put it in repair mode and let it desulphate over night. 12 hours later I looked at the charger and it had automatically shut off and the battery was putting out 15 volts! Incredible! Obviously my battery was not in terrible condition for it to desulphate in 12 hours. Still, I consider this whole process a miracle and a huge money saver.

There are a few Smart chargers that are identical to this one on Amazon, though they are sold under different names. I bought this one because it was 4 dollars cheaper to the identical competition.

The directions that come with the charger are useless, but there are many YouTube videos on how to use a smart charger. Immerse yourself. Using this charger is as simple as can be and almost foolproof. Important: For my car it is important to not hook the charger directly to the battery. Instead, under the hood are remote battery posts that must be used. Check with your owners manual on how to charge the battery in your model car.

I have been running my car and blasting the radio with the engine off, and my car life is great again. I’ve had no need to use it again. But if my battery does run down in the future I’ve got this great little device to remedy it.

What an awesome purchase! 5 stars and Bravo!

How are we enjoying this pandemic social distancing life, everyone?

As someone who wasn’t much a fan of driving even in The Before Times, I must say that I have appreciated being able to work from home.

But there was one issue — my car. Regrettably, though I set calendar reminders to drive my car once every other week or so, I didn’t. And so, one day, several months into social distancing, when I needed to run an errand and couldn’t get it delivered to me, I tried starting my car. Nothing.

Ah, no problem, I said to myself. I can do a jumpstart! And so I did, and the battery started, and I drove around the neighborhood for around 40 minutes.

But when I parked my car back again…alas, the next time I tried to start the car, nothing.

OK, not great. But I did have *time*. So, I researched how people *normally* work with vehicles that they don’t drive very often and found out about trickle chargers.

This product has been great for me. It has several different modes — one is a deep repair mode (that I ran overnight in the hopes that I wouldn’t have to buy a new battery entirely…and the great news was that it worked and I didn’t have to buy a new car battery.) But then, there are also modes for car batteries and motorcycle batteries. Since I don’t have a motorcycle, I can’t comment on that, but one great thing about this charger is that it modulates its charging based on what it senses from the battery — so if the battery is at full capacity, it reduces or stops charging.

This way, instead of having to set a reminder every few weeks to drive my car (or deal with an empty battery every few weeks), I can just periodically set the battery to trickle charge and not have to worry about a thing.

Was originally going to order a charger by GooLoo but didn’t want to wait till Feb to receive it. Found this model
‘In Stock” after a bit of searching instead and am glad I did. Not only is it about $10 cheaper but it does/did the same thing thing and is working like a charm!

I bought it mainly to support my riding lawnmower during the Winter off-season. Until now, I had been taking the riding mower out approx every 3 weeks to Start it and ride around for abt 5-mins to charge the battery when not in use. There were a few times over the years when I had to connect it to one of our car batteries for a Jump. What a hassle…

After this charger arrived a few days ago, I immediately hooked it up to my riding mower which is tucked away in the garage. I knew what to expect and do after reviewing the product on-line. Yep, the battery was at full voltage but the current in the cells were down to 60% usage and was automatically charging it back up. I didn’t have to do a thing other than a few quick & simple hookups and leaving it alone for about 5 hours when the battery charged up to 100% usage.

Next day, I put it in “Repair” mode by pressing the Function button and after leaving it alone for a little over 18 hours it automatically switched to the “OFF” State. I don’t yet now if it repaired anything in my battery or not but will see when I re-connect this charger back up in about 3 weeks to see if it’s holding a charge. I will amend my response at that time.
