  1. Staying afloat

It’s a 7 stage smart charger and I’ve had a few of them in different locations where I have stuff that uses batteries 🙃

This one stands out because it does the lithium too and lets me override and manually charge and select the levels I want. Also good that it has the port to attach it to vehicles where I already have a quick connect attached to the posts (motorcycle and vehicles already set up with smart trickle chargers, etc.)

Once in awhile the ad mentions “trickle” but a true trickle charge is down around 2, and a smart one cycles, and this cycles for sure, but states 5 is the minimum. Still, I think I’ll leave it hooked up for trickling purposes in some cases when I’m gone for one or two months, but I don’t think I will when I’m going to be gone seasonally.

Lots of versatility for this price point!

Where’s the case? (Doesn’t have one but the box works fine), I don’t like that the power cord can be and or has to be removed (and isn’t readily interchangeable with some other power cord you happen to have nearby when you need it). In other words, keep all the pieces and parts stored together!

I wish the cords were longer! For a variety of reasons, but one of the biggest is when you need to leave a charger on an SUV or a pickup and you want to put the charger itself under the vehicle so it’s protected and you can lower the hood to protect from the elements and to stop the underhood lamp from burning… Longer battery connection cords are better! Yes there can be workarounds by using a set of jumper cables chain clamped… But old school mechanic types totally freak out when you do stuff like that (just don’t invite them over when you’re using multiple connections to reach where you want 😉)… And if you don’t want them to stop by unannounced -don’t leave your hood up! LOL

  2. penguindeity

This was the most satisfied I have been with a product in a while. On the day I opened it, I found two separate uses for it: once to give my lawnmower battery enough voltage to crank, and another time to troubleshoot a hoverboard battery pack.

The charger doesn’t support very high amperage charging, and if your battery is completely dead, you may be waiting a while, but it is a jack of all trades when it comes to batteries, supporting all the common battery chemistries as well as 6V, 12V, and 24V configurations.

MOST importantly, it has a force mode, so if your battery is so dead that a standard charger wouldn’t detect it, it will allow you to charge the battery enough to recognize it and proceed with charging. This was also very useful when troubleshooting that dead hoverboard battery (it ended up being irreparable, but I knew for sure after using this to put a charge in it).

The display updates frequently and tells you the amperage currently being fed into the battery, the voltage, and the stage of charging.

This is a great deal. It feels heavy and durable, and the cords are detachable for neater storage.

I used the “WAVLINK Smart Battery Charger, 20-Amp, Car Battery Charger with LCD Display, for 6V/12V/24V Lead-Acid/Lithium/LiFePO4 Batteries, Trickle Battery Maintainer and Desulfurizer for Car, Boat, Motorcycles” to top-up the batteries in my cars when they are weak or old. This product being reviewed is model GS280C.
This charger came in a retail box with nicely sealed flaps. Inside it, the main charger unit is in a bag, and surrounded by good padding material. The accessories that came with it were: a two-pin cable that ends in alligator clips, a 2-wire power cord to connect to 120-240 VAC, and a pair of crimpable connectors (that I have yet to figure out). The manual is written clearly enough (has only minor grammar mistakes) and explains adequately most of the modes and functions of the GS280C.
I tested this charger with 3 car batteries: two sealed lead-acid (SLA), and one AGM. For the first SLA and the AGM, I used automatic current. The GS280C immediately detected automatically these batteries as 12V, and ramped up the charging current slowly over some 30 seconds, from 0 to around 9.5A. It took about 25 minutes to charge one SLA from 12.2 to 12.7 V, and about 15 minutes to top up the AGM from 12.2 to 12.54 V. I was impressed that this charger knows when to stop, depending on the battery chemistry; these ending voltages match the recommendations of how high to charge, that I’ve read elsewhere in the InterNet.
For the final SLA, I decided to try a constant 5A current. Strangely the charger kept going for over 2 hours, delivering towards the end 14.4 V and 1.6 A into the battery. I felt that this had been going on too long, and switched the unit back to automatic current mode. Within 2 minutes it detected the battery was fully charged, and stopped.
Overall this charger is very versatile and flexible. Its voltage readings were highly accurate (compared to my multimeter), and it handles different chemistries correctly. I tried lead-acid and AGM only, will test LiFePO4 and Lithium ion later. Other than the erroneous behavior of the constant current mode, it worked flawlessly. I rate it four and half stars.

  4. penguindeity

This is a heavy little charger. I was surprised by the weight but I will sat that is because there is a lot packed into a small package. It charged up the battery on my pickup without much issue. I know that the battery in the truck is failing and needs to be replaced but for the heck of it, I put the charger into repair mode and it quickly indicated that it would not be able to repair this battery. I knew that it couldn’t and was glad to see that it didn’t waste my time making it look like it was when it can’t. The display can be a bit hard to see in bright light. I found that looking at it from a slightly downward angle makes it much easier to see. In darker situations, it is quite easy to read and is fairly clear on what it’s doing. The only down side that I can see is that the charging cable is a bit on the cheap side but still fully functional.
