I bought my 2004 Subaru Forester 3 years ago used, and although there were full service logs I didn’t see anything about the cabin filter ever being replaced (from an owner who took it to the dealer to get the oil changed). From my understanding there was no cabin filter installed from the factory, and while I’ve taken it in for service a number of times (and fairly major service a couple times) and the dealer and multiple mechanics I’ve been to never mentioned it needed changing and it’s been low priority enough that I hadn’t bothered to check it myself previously (and $40 for the OEM filter was enough that I kept putting it off). My girlfriend however mentioned that the air in my car smells weird, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to do go ahead an do it. I went to get the OEM cabin filter online for $40, but a number of sources from the Subaru Forester forum pointed me towards this filter from TYC instead. For $13, I had no excuse not to get it.
It came in great condition and instructions with pictures on how to replace the current cabin filter or install this one if you didn’t have one already (it’s the same process either way more or less to be fair). That process was really easy thanks to Subaru, 9 screws you remove to take out the glovebox and the assembly is right there. I did have one in there already, and I have no idea how old it was, but it was pitch black and had a decent size pile of crap sitting on top of it, including dead leaves (no wonder the air smelled). This TYC filter fit in the slot easily, and I’ve noticed an dramatic improvement in both air quality and air flow since.
I do wish the black frame around the filter was more solid and was unibody instead of 2 pieces that separate easily, although I’ve got no idea if that’s just something with this filter or if it’s a design required by Subaru for some reason. The filter also was very transparent when I held it up to the light, a little worryingly so, but for $13 I can’t really complain.
All in all, if you haven’t changed your cabin filter, you probably need to. The good news is it’s super easy to do yourself as long as you have a phillips head screwdriver and with a filter this cheap there’s no excuse to not do it.

After getting my 2005 Forester XT, I decided to change the cabin air filter. it was horribly filled with dirt, pine needles, seeds, etc. The filter was almost black. Installation was straightforward following the owners manual. The TYC filter did fit in the same place, and was the same thickness as the filter I removed, which I did not check the brand name. I read about thicker filters being available, so I may try one of those in the future.

It does its job as it should. It fit perfectly on a 2006 Forester XT, and it seems to have good build quality.
A few reviews have said that it was flimsy, but I didn’t notice anything like that. I mean, don’t spike it like a football, but it’s perfectly normal construction for a “replacement interval” item that isn’t stressed or weight-supporting.

Was noticing problems with my AC. Worked for a little while and then hot, humid air was being blown in the cabin. AC would work again for a few minutes, etc. Went online and found a YouTube video. The mechanic said the first thing to check for problems like these is to check the cabin air filter. The AC evaporator was likely not getting enough return air and was freezing up. Found another YouTube video on how to change the filter, ordered it here on Amazon, installed it without any problems, and the AC works as good as the day I bought the car. Seriously, this is a very simple fix that will save you about $100 at a garage. It took all of 20-minutes to complete. The part is exactly like the factory installed filter. I couldn’t believe the debris that was clogged into the old filter. Gross stuff. I could not be happier with the purchase. Gotta love Amazon Prime. For less than 20 bucks I found the part, didn’t have to go from auto part store to store to find it, had it on my doorstep in a day, and installed perfectly in less than half an hour. Can’t beat the service.

This filter is a great replacement for the manufacturer’s filter. I has clear installation instructions. You have to remove the glove box to change the filter. The instructions include a diagram showing the locations of all the screws you have to remove. The whole process takes around 15 minutes. I save around $60 to $100 (depending if the dealer is running a special) purchasing and installing the filter myself.
If you are not convinced you need a filter, just try one. When you change it later, you will not believe the amount of dirt and debris the filter kept from entering the passenger compartment.

Filter arrived fast and was just as described. Took about ten minutes to install and immediately I could feel air flow improvement. Great product I’ll be buying again!

I recently purchased a 2007 Forester and ordered this cabin air filter and am I glad I did! The old filter was filthy and not doing any favors for my HVAC system. This filter fit perfectly and at a better price than the local auto stores.

It fits perfectly on my Subaru Forester 2003.
The air flow is much better and the air conditioner is cooler then before.
Very happy!!

Bought this for my 2004 Forester. I acquired the car about 12 months ago. Started to notice funky smell from air vents. Replaced very dirty and blocked cabin air filter with this product. After a couple hours of driving, the new filter cleared out the smell.
This filter is not a premium filter, so I assume it will last about one year before it needs to be replaced. Will probably go with a more upscale HEPA filter next time, but this is doing the job for now.
