This review applies the the Ford AOD kit. I hard 3-4 and 4-3 shifts for so long that I thought it was normal. Then 4th stopped working altogether. I decided that trying this kit was way cheaper than a $1000+ rebuild at a transmission shop, or a $300+ rebuilt valve body.
Important: I knew that I had a valve body problem and not something broken inside the transmission.
As predicted by many re-builders, my valve body had some broken retaining clips. The kit includes stronger clips. The kit also includes high quality gaskets for the valve body. However, the real magic appears to be the spring loaded office which replaces the 3-4 check ball. After I finished, the 3-4 shifts (at lower speeds) were so smooth that I had to pay attention to see if they really happened. No tachometer in my 1983 Ford F100. It was never that smooth before.
Some advice to first-time mechanics. Cleanliness is everything! You MUST take precaution to see that everything that goes back into the transmission is so clean that you could eat off of it. Do not clean with rags! Lint from rags can get into one of the many tiny holes in the valve body and cause a failure. Use a torque wrench for everything! My factory shop manual specs the valve body torque at 80-100 inch pounds.

The instructions were a little confusing but you’ll figure it out…

Crisp shifts

There are instructions like: bore hole 7 thousandths over. And that’s where it has instructions. But if you Do know what you’re doing, it’s an amazing price on a great shift kit.
