Good in theory, not one instruction on how to set it up…pretty…pointless, so 3 stars at best. . Shop elsewhere if you need to know how to install it, as there were no instructions. After fiddling around with it for quite some time, I did figure it out and it did work…it was not what I needed to fix problem, but when I modified it, it worked perfectly. Apparently the focus has a defect where the price that the cylinder engages it gets worn out…so I modified this part to turn 360 degrees…with a file…I suppose I may make a video of how to do it to save people time and money and avoid replacing the housing.

First… it did not come with instructions. Normally for something that really needs instructions this would warrant a 1 star deduction at least, but there are many YouTube videos and web pages that explain how to assemble this, remove the old one and install your newly assembled one. I would have relied on them anyway, so there really wasn’t a problem with not having instructions included.

It did include everything else and by following the guidance available on the web, it went together perfectly the first time, installed fine and operates fine. I have had no issues with my steering wheel locking up since I installed the new cylinder. Best of all… I did it myself and I have zero experience with locks and have never gone into a steering column before. I was able to do it on my own time, did not have to take my car to a mechanic and leave it for a day and did not have to pay the $200-$250 estimated charge I was quoted.

I went really slow and carefully and took about 2 hours to get it done from start (opening the bag) to finish (starting my car with the new cylinder). Now that I have done it once I’m sure I could do the whole job in under 30 minutes.

I would give it 6 stars if I could. And, BTW, I would give the internet 10 stars. What a wonderful thing it is!

I’m a recent victim of the embarrassingly engineered Ford ignition cylinder; so when my key would no longer turn in the ignition I did some research and found this product. I have to say, I was very worried about installing this myself—not because I’m not handy, but because I had to put on my locksmithing hat to assemble the cylinder and tumblers to accommodate my keys (who wants to get a whole new set and have them keyed to a new cylinder?!).

But here’s the thing—my work was done in less than an hour. And the spring/tumbler assembly was a piece of cake. There are several YouTube videos out there that will walk novices (like me) through each step. The cylinder is installed and working to perfection.

    Some advice from my experience…

First: when I was assembling springs and tumblers, I used a technique I saw in a video to test that I was doing things correctly. The locksmith inserted the unit into the casing reversed to see if the tumblers depressed enough to turn it in the casing. This sort of worked for me, but I got a little worried I was doing something wrong because there was some resistance. It was fine. Just fine.

Second: When I got to the second to last tumbler (the second closest to the key), I had trouble getting the key in. I had to wiggle the key; a few times I had to slightly depress the tumbler before the key would go in and fully depress the tumbler (and yes, I had the same problem with all 3 keys!). Of course, I was worried what this might mean given that once the cylinder is inserted into the casing (at least from what I read online), I’d have a beast of a time getting it out. All this to say, I took a chance and, once assembled, the key no longer stuck on this tumbler.

Third: Like in the video I watched, I too had a tumbler (#7/second in from the end) that was a bit proud of the others. The video said not to worry about it, so I didn’t. No problems.

If you’re wondering if you’re up for fixing your ignition cylinder, this product will assuage any of your doubts. You can fix it!

I bought this piece to use for my 2008 Ford Focus SE. As other reviews stated, overtime it gets harder and harder to jiggle the key or push it in so that it starts until it just stops starting at all; which inevitably happened to me. My dad and I spent two hours setting and putting in this part just to find out that this piece was not needed for my issue. Turns out the entire housing needed to be replaced that holds the lock cylinder. I wish I had read further into this issue before wasting my time. I ended up bringing it to a friends shop to fix even though I could’ve bought the part on amazon and done it for cheaper myself. Long story short, buy both and see which one fixes the problem, could be either or but for me this did nothing. The part worked great as needed and that’s why it deserves 5 stars and it was a great deal! Dealership quoted me $400 for this tiny piece…absolutely ridiculous. The housing sells on amazon for about $140. Cost me $200 for part and $150 for labor…. just FIX IT YOURSELF. Online tutorials, videos and forums will tell you what to do AND you don’t have to remove the steering column to fix it! Just pull off the bolt and replace it with one you buy separately! Most importantly, DO YOUR RESEARCH.

When my wife’s Focus ignition switch started to jam, I thought I was looking a $300 – $500 repair. This kit did the trick! Although it came with NO instructions, I watched several YouTube videos, took the old lock cylinder out, and did surgery. I suggest that you work undistracted in a well lit area and give yourself several hours, as no one will be using the car until it is fixed.
This lock is made quite differently than the original, and I might add that it is much simpler and sturdier inside. It can be set to any key, so as long as you don’t get in a hurry, you will save yourself a lot of money! Just work slowly and carefully, as the parts are tiny. Get out your smallest tools before you start, tweezers, hemostats, magnifying glass, picks, etc. Put all the small parts in small containers first, so they don’t get lost! And, be sure to watch several YouTube FIRST! That way, you will understand what is needed.
