I have had this cap since March of last year and while it was always a bit of a trick to open, it did actually open. This past month it decided to give me nothing but heartache and hell. A couple weeks ago, while trying to take advantage of the slightly reasonable(yeah, right) gas price, I pulled into the gas station and began trying to remove my Stant locking gas cap…to no avail. I struggled with it for about 20 minutes, before asking another customer to try, thinking maybe they would have better luck. Nope…they had the same problem I did. I struggled some more and still it would not open. Just when I was ready to give up and pull out of the gas station lot, I pulled over to a different pump and gave it another try. FINALLY, I got it off and filled my tank. Thinking it was just partially frozen, since it was below zero and very briskly windy, I put it back on and hoped that was a one time struggle.
About a week or so later, when I saw the gas was even lower(lucky me…right?), I attempted to pull over to the pump and try to remove the gas cap. Same issue happened again and this time I struggled with it for over 40 minutes, determined to get that cap off and get another. And I, again, asked another customer at the next pump to try helping me…and he also had no luck. I just could not get it off, with or without anyone’s help…and I pulled off disappointed in missing out on a decent gas price.
I researched to see what might work to get this cap off, so I could replace this piece of overpriced junk and found a couple options. Seeing that I needed to go to Advance Auto Parts to get new wipers put on, I thought I would ask the man who helped me out to also try getting the cap off. He struggled, as those who tried before, and still could not get it off. He agreed that I needed to try blow-drying it, in case there was frozen water that had gotten inside and to use WD-40 to lubricate the locking mechanism. I went home disappointed again and decided I would wait to mess with it on the next warmer day, which was coming up the following week-end.
The week-end came and, yep, you guessed it…the tricks I planned to try did NOT work and that damn cap was still holding on for dear life and making me more and more angry, as I watched the gas prices soar and my tank grow more and more empty and there was not a damn thing I could do about it without paying a locksmith or a mechanic with money I don’t have.
Thankfully, tonight, I looked the old listing for this cap up on Amazon and read the negative reviews. There I found one from a man named Dennis who explained out to pull up on the cap and get it to release before turning it off. My Brother and I struggled to do that, as he mentioned, and about 10 minutes later the cap was in his hands and I was so relieved! So kudos to Dennis for explaining how to do that. Even though that further tells you what junk this item is if you can just pry up on it and get it to screw off without any tool and only your own hands.
I will never buy another Stant product as long as I live. Do yourselves a favor and don’t waste your hard-earned money on such poorly made garbage. Even though the ratings were decent when I bought it…read the negatives and keep those in mind before purchasing something that could keep you from filling your gas tank in an emergency situation. If I could rate it at NO STARS, I would. But I can’t. So 1 star will have to do.

I got quoted the same exact gas cap at three local auto part stores and they were all the same. $20. Thank God for Amazom and for their amazing vendors! Works well, reasonably priced and hassle free service makes this gas cap the BEST!

Old gas cap was giving me problems, primarily not locking and my car gave me a check engine light. Purchased one from Autozone-Duralast brand and it was a piece of junk. Didn’t even lock!! Two other vehicles have Stant gas caps and have not ever had issues with. Should have bought from the start! Once installed, check engine light went off. Will definitely buy again if I get another car.

good but keys jam some

Works as I expected. Easier to lock than I had expected. So far my gas level is staying where I notice it between drives so apparently this serves as just enough deterrent to have the gas thieves go somewhere else for easier siphoning.

Arrived properly packaged and fully functional. Fits like a glove, works well.
I also purchased a p/n 10508 for another vehicle and it too works well etc..
However, I can’t remember which one, but one of them didn’t have written instructions on how to unlock the cap. I fought with it for a day until I received the other cap. That cap came with written instructions printed on the cap. What a relief to finally understand how they both work.
Here is how they work. UNLOCK: turn key a 1/4 turn counterclockwise then back to the right and remove key, unscrew cap. (note; you don’t reuse the key to lock the cap.) To LOCK: just replace cap and turn clockwise 3 clicks and it’s locked.
I’ve had other locking gas caps that required using the key to lock it. Hence the confusion….especially when Stant didn’t include instructions with my March 2011 purchase.
I like using my key once and then putting it back in my pocket.
