While the front of the charger says that this is for “Farm & Ranch” use, I’ve had no difficulties using it on perfectly standard car batteries. Yes, it works for the lawn tractor battery as well, charging it up fully and then placing it on a maintenance charge just as it does for car batteries. You may just want more than one of these so you can leave each of your batteries on a trickle charge. If I were to nitpick at all, I’d suggest that it would be nice to have some additional feedback as to charge level – is the charging almost done, or do we still have a long way to go? As it is, you know when the unit has switched to maintenance charging but you get little information prior to that to indicate what progress has been achieved.

I like having a small, portable car battery charger that is easy to carry around and doesn’t take up a lot of space in my garage. The Schumacher FR01242 10A 6/12V DOE Automatic Battery Charger has several features that make it a good choice for anyone looking to get a small sized charger.
One really nice feature is the reverse hookup protection. I’ve never really understood why people are so freaked out by connecting a battery charger to a car, but it really does throw some folks for a loop. And a big fear seems to be that they are worried they will wire it up backwards and cause an explosion.
Well worry no more! This Schumacher Battery Charger has reverse polarity (i.e. you hooked it up backwards) protection and there is an LED that will blink if you do hook it up backwards and nothing will happen. You just see the LED blinking and swap the connectors and everything starts to work. No explosion, no sparks, no fires – just a blinking light! My wife was thrilled to find this out.
Another nice feature is the microprocessor controlled charging. That means that you don’t have to measure anything. Just plug it in, hook it up to the battery and let it do the job. This comes in really handy for me as I own a sports car and sometimes it sits for a couple of weeks, especially when we go on vacation somewhere. I can leave this charger hooked to the battery and it will “tend” the battery and keep it charged to the max, without over-charging it. So when we return home, the battery is in top condition and ready to go.
Finally, there are different battery technologies out there that require different charging profiles. The Schumacher FR01242 10A 6/12V DOE Automatic Battery Charger is able to charge standard batteries and AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries without any difficulty.
It is also lightweight and small enough for anyone to use.

This Schumacher charger is perfect for a quick hook up to our lawn mower battery, Miller welder and a couple of our older ATVs. Yes, it has an adorable frowny face light if you get the cables on wrong, but you just won’t. Black on black and red on red. I usually hook up then plug in the charger as well. Not sure if correct but I don’t get those annoying sparks that way. Schumacher is a long-standing, highly regarded quality brand. This charger is perfect for us on our small ranch.

Tried it on a dead battery. It did not charge it or say that battery was bad. Took the car to Ford dealer and since it was in warranty, they replaced it FREE. Maybe it will work as a trickle charger.

Didn’t work well for me. Dead batteries from the boat that were fine, just dead, didn’t charge….
Used it about 5 or 6 times to maintain a battery, and now it won’t ever charge a half drained battery!!!
No lights come on and it’s just dead. Not heavy duty at all.

I feel I was misled on this ad for it appeared to indicate it was a battery charger for a car, but when it arrived, it stated it was for a ranch or farm equipment. The clips are too small for charging a car battery. It’s obviously for charging batteries on smaller equipment. Unfortunately, I don’t have any ranch or farm equipment to test this out on.
It is made out of a sturdy hard plastic and small enough to carry around. It’s lightweight, but it didn’t work for our purpose. I’m irritated about the mis-lead, but you might be able to use it on your equipment.

This is a great little charger. It doesn’t weigh very much, but do not let that fool you. Its case is very strong and its power is most useful.
You connect it and switch it on. That is all.
Then it will either charge your battery or keep it charged.
It does not overheat when working hard. It is built to last. An excellent charger.
