Installed this on an ’06 Hummer H3, which should have been a 15 minute job, but turned into 40 minutes (see issues below).
The cable housing is smaller in diameter than the OEM cable – it’s more like a bicycle brake cable. The plastic end that hooks into the hood latch end appears to be a softer material than OEM too – time will tell if it holds up.
There are three major issues:
– The grommet that is installed on the cable that goes through the firewall is VERY soft, weak rubber. I lubed it a bit to pull it through the firewall easier, but still had a difficult time getting the base to seat. Pulling slightly on the neck of the boot from the engine bay tore the neck completely off – even with very little force (see picture). I had to press on the grommet from the inside with a plastic trim tool, but even the dull tool poked into the rubber. After 20 minutes of battling, I took the new cable out and put the old one in to see if that grommet was as difficult to install. That one popped into place in a couple minutes. But I again removed the old one, took another 10 minutes to wrestle the new one in, and called it quits. I’ll have to goop some RTV around the grommet from the engine bay side to repair the torn rubber neck and make a permanent seal. I should have removed the OEM grommet and used that on the new cable instead.
– The hood release bracket has a hook, but it is bent in the opposite direction of OEM so it didn’t engage the slot in the dash at all. The only thing holding the bracket in place are the two mounting screws. See my picture showing the new plate on the left, OEM plate on the right.
– The hinge pin on the release lever is a cheap rivet, and the swaged end was very thin and ragged.
Time will tell if this unit holds up for another 18 years like the OEM one did.
