My 4Runner’s hatch has a soft close feature that failed, and I didn’t want to pay the dealer pricing for an OEM Toyota part. This is an OK alternative. It’s easy enough to replace if you’re a novice DIY mechanic – plug and play. I think a big part of the issue is that these assemblies aren’t well sealed against dirt, and that causes them to fail over time. This part is working fine for now and my hatch release works again, but time will tell how durable it is.

Removed the old unit and replaced with this one. I had to reset the device by removing the fuse (ECU-B 10A) and replacing it but otherwise no issues. This unit includes an orange string attached to the release lever, which is a nice addition, but you need to poke a little hole through the weather membrane for it, so mark that while the inside body panel is still in place.

The weatherstripping failed on my rear window, allowing lots of dirt and debris to fill my rear hatch and plug the drainage holes. This caused my locking mechanism to rust and stop working every time, especially in cold weather. Replacing this isn’t too difficult but its kind of an annoying process if you’ve never done it before. First off, I replaced my window weather stripping to prevent debris from getting into the door again. Then you have to remove the grab handle, and pull the plastic panel off. Once the panel is off you need to carefully remove the plastic membrane which has VERY sticky gasket goo on the back of it and it stains really bad so be careful where you put it. Once the plastic membrane is off, you have access to everything inside the door, then its just unclipping plugs, undoing a few fasteners and it swaps right back into place.
