My left front wheel started getting hot after even short trips lately and from time to time car would kind of “struggle” to start from zero speed. When I got to the caliper, it quickly became obvious that one piston was sticking. Its dust boot was torn and it was in a very bad condition. Repair kits that I found in my local parts store were going for $10+ and would’ve required me to potentially spend many hours on restoring my caliper to a working condition. That was the time I started looking for a replacement caliper and found this Raybestos one. For ~$50 it was cheaper than most of brake jobs you can get at any mechanic’s, so I figured it’s totally worth a try. Long story short – it was a totally right thing to do.
Caliper arrived in a small cardboard box wrapped in plastic. It is a semi-loaded caliper, so the only thing missing were brake pads (I reused the ones I got when I did the break job the last time a year ago – they were still very decent). Caliper pins were well lubricated with tight dust boots on them. Two copper crush washers were supplied, as well as anti-rattle clips. The overall quality and finish seemed to be very nice.
It fit my 2000 Crown Vic LX right away, no issues at all. Even though I am not a professional mechanic, it took me less than 2 hours right on my driveway to replace the caliper and bleed the brakes. All issues with brakes and wheel overheating immediately went away.
Overall I am very satisfied. Next time I am working with the right side of my front end, I’ll check the old caliper and if it is too worn, I’m not going to wait for issues to start showing up, but I will rather order a Raybestos one for the right side as well – it is much-much cheaper than cost of solving any issues that might happen.
