On modern cars with the rings you have to remove to get access to the fuel pump, this is an invaluable tool. dont use a screwdriver and a hammer and risk damaging or cracking the ring. Use this instead, size it and you can get the torque you need to get that cap off and on!
Mindfull –
Hooray! No more using a hammer and screwdriver to try to tap a ring loose. This tool has the depth one needs to do a pump from up top on those tanks where you can change the pump without dropping the tank. Sometimes there’s a fair amount of depth required to get to them. Even on those one needs to drop- it’s STILL far easier using this than improvising some tool to release the ring- which all too often is corroded and difficult to break loose.
Even if you only need it once, it’s worth it- but this tool is designed to last a long time.
Mindfull –
This tool is made with the quality I’m used to seeing in the dollar bin at a thrift shop. It looks like it will be somewhat usable to remove fuel sender retaining rings as long as they’re not overly tightly attached or arrested. I was so disappointed in the crudeness of the included half inch to 3/8 adapter that I just tossed that in my metal recycling bin. I have others so much better quality even though they are not of a fancy brand name. My recommendation is to keep looking if you need a tool like this.

I feel as I get older I buy tools I never would have 20yrs. ago. I have removed and installed countless fuel pumps with a good old hammer and pry-bar and never really had an issue. However after using this on my daughter’s 99 explorers fuel pump I wish I had one sooner. For $20 its well worth the investment! Simply locate the tabs on the retainer ring wings and turn it with a long handled socket wrench and your done. Its really a simple and well built tool. Its a great addition to any shop or garage!

This definitely worked to loosen the fuel pump ring on my Corolla. The wing nuts allow the tool to be adjusted to the width required. But keep in mind that when you start applying torque to the ratchet, you should aim to keep the fingers of the tool fairly symmetrical to each other distance-wise. Otherwise, it will slip as you turn off-centered. Also be careful with the amount of torque you use to retighten the ring. Most are plastic so you don’t need a lot to get it tight.
The casting on the tool isn’t great but isn’t horrible. I think that, if well taken care of, it should be able to see many fuel pump jobs for most mechanics or at home DIYers. Definitely better than slamming a screwdriver into the ring with a hammer.

As a professional automotive technician I’m always looking for quality tools at affordable prices. You don’t need overpriced tool truck brands to be good at what you do. I owned a tool exactly like this but loaned it to a coworker and it magically “disappeared”. So I found this one and ordered it.
This tool is designed for the rounded edge plastic fuel pump lock rings. It is built heavy with cast iron legs and a very solid crossbar. The build quality is very good. It is adjustable from about 3″ to nearly 8″ wide. The arms are adjustable with wing nuts and once tightened down it is very solid. This tool is very useful and will remove and install the plastic ring without damage rather than using a hammer and flat blade screwdriver. It has a 3/8″ square drive in the crossbar but also includes an adapter for 1/2″ square drive or 21mm hex.

For the open-access tanks or ones you drop down, this tool makes life much easier. For the sedan tanks that you work on inside the trunk or rear seat that have the recessed opening, this tool is a MUST HAVE. The long “fingers” give you a great grip in such a small space. Awesome tool for a small amount of money.
