Ordered a while ago and just got around to getting it installed this weekend.

First off I’ll point out that Powertrax put the WRONG instruction booklet in the box. Was instructions for a Dana 35 rear, not a Dana 30 front.

And the power trax website wasn’t much help either..

Secondly, the install went alright. Pulling the carrier out wasn’t what we expected but oh well. Upon getting this locker installed in the carrier there was still a questionable amount of play with the two outer pieces that connect to the axle shafts.

When driving, this locker makes a ver faint clicking when I turn to the left, and somewhat concerning clunks and pops when turning to the right….

Long story short, I’d spend more money on a better product from Yukon next time around.

Great product, super quiet operation, clunks very very infrequently, I forget that I’m driving a locker. Easy to install, clearances are tiiiight but work. There’s discrepancy in the instructions about the c clip slots – for a gm 10 bolt it said I should only have one slotted driver but I had two. I called the tech line and he said it was fine that kits now come with two slotted drivers and the c clips can install into both slots. With previous kits you used to have to “build” the c-clip into the driver side locker driver, but now both drivers have slots for c clips to install into, it does not matter which version you have.

This is a great locker, I am going to give advice which I didn’t have. When installing in a Cherokee with Chrysler c-clip axles, you will need to grind down both c-clips on both side edges in order for the clips to not only slide in but to slide out if axles need to be changed. I found out the hard way where a c-clip went in tightly then would not drop out when I needed to change axles and I had to drill it out. The c-clip slot in the locker should have been made a little larger or at least this grinding down detail could have been put in the instructions. The unit itself works brilliantly, there is no ratcheting noise going around corners as on most lunchbox lockers, the only thing you hear occasionally is the clunk when it engages and that is normal on all lockers. Would have 5 stars if it was not for that minor detail of grinding down the c-clips by a little less than a 1/8th of an inch on each side of both c-clips.

Could not be happier, this locker is amazing, this is my second non-slip, I got one for the rear differential and this is for the front so now my Jeep is double locked, the cost is very reasonable and the installation was fairly simple taking me a couple of hours to complete. Also, they are virtually invisible while driving on road because they have extra slack to differentiate the wheels, they are also easier on the universal joints and steering components while off road. In short, I love both of them and how my Jeep does on the trail, it can do things I could never imagine doing.

I bought this locker about halfway through last year to take care of my trucks awesome one wheel peel when trying to take off in the rain. I installed it in an ’06 Ford Ranger Sport 4×4. My truck has a 4.0v6 and a tow package so it has 4.10 gears on stock tires (about 31″) but came with an open diff from the factory for some strange reason. That diff and our cities roads that get super slick, like polished concrete slick, when it gets wet, and the city has grass that gets watered almost every morning around 4am when I’m heading to work so the one wheel peel action was no longer an option.

I didn’t want to go with a full center section because I didn’t feel comfortable removing the whole diff and have to set it all back up. I read that lockers aren’t recommended for vehicles with a manual but I had enough of the tire spin.

As a kit, the install instructions were clear and easy to follow. I did make the mistake of using the grease more like an assembly lube and used a pretty good amount. Don’t do that… The purpose of the grease is solely for holding the parts together so it doesn’t fall apart as you are assembling it. Using a lot cause very, very harsh disengagements for about the first dozen times as it worked the grease out, so harsh it made me cringe.

I have probably about 10-12k miles and almost a year on it now and it’s had more harsh disengages but not too often, so I chalked it up to having a piece of off road equipment in a daily driven pavement pounder, but now it has started to click on take off and decel since I do downshift as I slow down. At first the click was only on hard acceleration or decel but now it is doing it with moderate as well, so now I’m a little fearful for the rear end of my truck. I only noticed it a week ago and changed the fluid (which was still pretty clear and not cheap since I used Mobil 1 synthetic, 3 qts) and it is still there. I put the axle on stands and had my neighbor listen as I got the wheels turning and rode the brakes to give it a load to force it to click so I know for a fact it is coming from the diff. I also emailed powertrax 2 days ago and haven’t even gotten as much as an auto generated “we got your message and will get back”.

As my experience sits, I CANNOT recommend this unit to anyone unless you have money to burn. Hopefully powertrax rectifies this soon. I noted I was worried about my diff eating itself alive in hopes of a speedy reply since it’s my daily driver, but no avail. If I don’t get a response from them soon I will start removing stars. If they fix it soon I will add them because when it works as intended, I love my locker despite tire scrub around corners because traction is nice.

Edit: found the issue was elsewhere. I’m not adding any stars and I’m not removing any either. I love the locker, I really do, but when I thought I absolutely needed powertrax, they were no where to be found. It has a 2 year/100k mile warranty so I’m not sure why I never got a response. I will tell anyone who asks me about off road stuff about their customer support as well. Had I known they were like this I would have gone with a different locker.

Removing a star because I STILL have yet to hear from powertrax. I love my locker, but their customer service seems non existant…

    Edit 12/12/19

STILL no word from from powertrax and now the damn thing isn’t engaging after taking corners, which, wouldn’t you know it is one of the main functions of a locker. I’ve emailed powertrax YET AGAIN since obviously this is a defect of my locker, not a u joint that cause the clicking I described before. I told them how after I spent over $400 on this part that it’s absolutely ridiculous that i havent gotten a response from the last email, and if I dont get one this time my review will hit 1 star. I see it’s already down to 2 stars, so I guess it’s going down to 1 earlier than expected because i really dont expect to hear back from them this time. If i dont get a response back in a week, I’m taking this to social media… Support your frigging product people spend hard earned money on, is that too much to ask?! I dont think so when there’s a swarm of competitors out there…

    Edit 12/23/2019
Actually heard from and bidirectional communication with powertrax this time (which they admitted to getting my last email and never responded, so thanks for helping me in my time of need, powertrax).

They said the behavior of my locker is strange but did not suggest anything until I remove the unit and disassemble it and inspect it. I could not remove the unit since I couldn’t get the axle in far enough in my limited time working on it (didn’t take the wheel and drum off that should have allowed me to remove the c clip to remove the locker). I did find out that the springs are a really common issue on a ranger/exploder forum, and since I found 2 broken springs in the housing, I went ahead and ordered 2 Powertrax 8001-001-KAV spring kits so I have one on the shelf next time this happens. No response from powertrax this go round, but I let them know what I found in the diff and online and that I’ve ordered 2 spring kits despite how disappointed I am in their product after 20-25k miles despite a 100k mile/2 year (which I’m out on) warranty… leaving my review at 1 star due to my frustration…

    Edit 5/3/20

Got the new spring kit in shortly after receiving them and my locker worked as expected again. Few months later and it’s starting to not engage all the time again, but not as bad as before. I was planning on lifting my truck and putting an Explorer axle under it (stronger, 31 spline axle shafts and disc brakes) but I’m certainly not going to use a powertrax product of any kind. Never did hear back from them in my last email. As far as I’m concerned, their products and customer service are pure garbage. Hopefully my experience travels far and wide so others don’t waste their hard earned money and time on their products.

You won’t find a less expensive mod that gives you the performance of this locker. I bought this after not being able to conquer an obstacle on a trail and had to turn back. I was not ready to put a Detroit locker in the rear due to gear ratio issues. This front locker worked with current gear ratios. This locker makes no clicking or pinging noise at all. In 4wd it is 100% locked and performed flawlessly. It was easy to install following the included directions. After installing I went back to the trail and went through the previously tough obstacle and made it no problem. I highly recommend.

This thing is pretty easy to install but can be very tricky to get back out if you need to. However, it really does function better than any lunchbox locker that I’ve ever had and even quieter than full case auto lockers that I’ve had. Traction is excellent, of course. I drive a manual 97 XJ and aside from an occasional clunk when I power through a turn, this thing is smooth as butter.

  8. Vaulter

    It included no instructions
Had to modify it a little bit to fit
Once it was in and back together it locks up nice and you can’t hear it ratcheting at all like other lockers
Installed it on my 03 sierra 1500 8.6 gm 10 bolt

This was the only auto-locker, that I’m aware of, for the Dana 35 equipped with Trac-Lok limited slip (2000 Jeep TJ). Didn’t really get much in the way of communication from the seller but the product still arrived on-time and was in perfect condition in factory packaging. The install was a little trickier than I thought. Basically I had to skip the instructions for the right side syncho/paddle and get them in seprately. Once I figured out that step it was a snap. The locker does have a brief break-in period where there may be some pops but that went away quickly and then had smooth operation. Off-road this things is awesome! I was instantly able to clear obstacles much easier. Huge improvement in off-road capability. I would not want to run this without upgraded axle shafts though! Only downside is that you will have to change your on-road driving habits. Quick turns/accelerations WILL lock up the rear axles and you will spin/chirp the inside tire. You quickly learn to “feather” the gas pedal on turns (from stop signs and parking lots).
