I’ve been a licensed technician since 1989. I replaced the coil as well as the pickup unit at the same time. I have dealt with coils in points and pick up units for all my life and I’ve never fried a pick-up coil. I have seen coils installed both positive and negative to the negative side and never seen a problem. I connected the wires backwards to the coil which allowed the power to go backwards through the pickup unit and fried it instantly. I then did some research and read in the fine print that it should not be hooked up backwards. Then went online and found more recent instructions which had a bold print heading telling not to hook them up backwards. We have now redesigned the unit and instead of black they have a red one which is protected against connecting backwards. So in summary connect the power correctly to the pickup coil. I sent a letter saying I made a mistake to the manufacturer and attached my Amazon invoice and have not heard back from them as to if or when they might help me out with a replacement red unit at a cost of the difference between the two.

Yipeeee! This is my third attempt at doing this. I’ve ordered a 3 others and none fit. I suggest getting the distributor number and using that as a reference. Simply Delco, OMC or GM 6 cyl didn’t work all the time.

I was having some pinging and misfiring issues, used this and all set. Worked great. Took my boat from 1950s tech to 1970s tech in about a half hour.
