The ignition works very well. The tractor starts up immediately which wasn’t the case with the original ignition. My complaints are the instructions and fit / finish. The instructions seem to be written by someone not fluent in English and some steps seem to be missing. The distributor cap doesn’t fit tight to the top plate. Additionally, the top plate doesn’t extend to the edges of the distributor body. Since the top plate is only held on by one screw and the plug for the coil it looks like it could let moisture into the distributor. I used sealed it up and hopefully it will be good to go.

Definitely glad I did the upgrade.

Put this in my 1942 Ford 9N and it started right up. I’m knocking off one star for two reasons. First, the directions are terrible. If someone doesn’t have a good understanding of their distributor and ignition, they will really be lost trying to install this. Some illustrations to go alone with the written instructions would be nice (hint: my tractor does not have a “shim washer”). Fortunately there are very helpful YouTube videos available, just google “install electronic ignition Ford 9N” and you’ll find them. Also your cam lobe needs to be in decent shape for this part to work; if it’s rounded off over time, the part won’t fit, you will have to buy a new distributor too (fortunately they are cheap). Other reason for knocking off a star – the electronic ignition needs to be paired with suppression plug wires, not the copper or steel core. Failing to use the right wires can cause the part to fail (Pertronix confirmed this with me). That should definitely be mentioned in the instruction manual because who wants a $200 part to fail in short order because nobody told you you needed different spark plug wires? Hopefully they will correct this omission in the manual. Other than that, I’m very happy with how easily my old tractor starts now.

If you have an old ford tractor and are tired of dealing with subpar ignition parts, cheap points that burn out, and a tractor that wont run right, this is the kit for you! My 1942 9n has never started so easily and ran so good since I’ve owned it. 20 degree weather and it fires right up like a new car with a little bit of choke. Before I had to sit there and crank it for ages before it would even think about firing off. 10/10 would definitely recommend this for your old tractor

Installed this on my 8n with front mounted distributor. Makes a big difference on how it runs! No more points to replace!

I have a 1950 Ford 8N with a front-mount distributor that’s a 12V conversion that I’ve owned for about 10 years. Usually it’s run like a top, but occasionally I’ve spent weeks figuring out why it all of a sudden wouldn’t start or run, something not too unusual with these machines. When there is a problem, it’s usually spark related. This go-round I put in new points, adjusted the timing, and cleaned the carburetor. Things I’ve done many times before, but each time I ended up with a sputtering tractor that backfired. One problem with aftermarket points and condensers is quality control. These days, many times new parts are already bad. I have no idea if that was part of my problem, but I think it might have been.

Fed up with removing the distributor and adjusting points, I finally bit the bullet and purchased this Pertronix electronic ignition and coil. Honestly, I may have been able to have gotten it running by changing the plugs since I probably flooded it and wetted the plugs while over-choking during my attempts to get it running. Note that I did install new Autolite 437s which I’m sure made a difference.

Installing the ignition module in the old distributor housing was a cinch. The most difficult part was figuring out where to mount the coil. See my pic of where I chose to mount mine. It may look strange, but functionally its a great spot. Easy to access and perfect for the wire lengths provided. (Note: the instructions mention a shin washer which my old distributor didn’t have. You can ignore the “install the shim washer” instruction if yours doesn’t have one. I actually called Pertronix customer service, and the tech was very polite and helpful.). There were some visible cracks between the old distributor housing and the wafer-board top plate after installation, so I filled in the small cracks with clear silicone to prevent moisture intrusion.

My tractor, which hadn’t run in 8-weeks, started up on the first press of the starter switch and purred. Literally. I am able to place the throttle to the lowest setting, something I was never able to do before, and the tractor idles great. This is likely due to the much hotter sparks from the Pertronix coil which throws a 40kV spark compared to my old square-can 12V coil that was producing something like 17kV. Also, no choking is required when starting, so no more flooding.

I should have installed this module the first time I ever had spark issues. So glad I installed this and bet I won’t have any starting or running issues for years. This upgrade is easy to do and will save me hours of future maintenance. A+++

The media could not be loaded.

I had a pertronix on a hot Merc Flathead V8 20 years ago. It was the best mod I did on that engine. Fast forward to now….another Ford Flathead. This time a ‘41 9N that has never been apart. Again…best mod ever. It started so fast the first time that I thought something was wrong! Yes it’s expensive. But with the quality of points and condensers available today…$$ well spent.

Overall a fantastic product with an unbelievable price. Instructions are horrid! If you have any kind of mechanical ability that won’t be an issue. Only thing is the cover that replaces the square coil is not quite held on square but it works. My tractor starts runs and idles better than it ever has. Ford 9N.

  8. Brandon

Retrofitted to my 1945 Ford 2N. No more hassle with points and condenser, starts easily even on a cold day. When i get another old tractor I will buy another one of these.

  9. Brandon

Very easy to assemble with pretty good instructions. Would have liked a new rotor with this kit though. Hardest part is r & r the distributor on this Ford 8N tractor but easier than tuning up old points.

  10. J English

If you have an old ford 8 or 9n. Definitely buy this. You won’t regret it. My tractor runs way smoother and starts much easier now. I bought a new distributor when I did the upgrade also just to start with new clean parts. I had to make a longer wire for the spark wire to the coil, so I could mount it on the battery box.
