  1. Amazon Customer

I purchased this universal fuel pump removal tool as an alternative to the over priced Volvo tool 999 5485. Although it is not clear from the photo, this tool is all metal and of solid construction. I thought that the spanner part was plastic or carbon fiber – no metal. It worked like a charm on a Volvo 850 turbo to loosen the large plastic nut that holds down the fuel pump. Installation was a little more difficult. If the tool was not fully pressed down (seated) on the nut, it would slip. It was able to handle the 40 Nm needed to torque down the fuel pump retaining nut. The size of the slit is larger than the plastic tabs on the Volvo retaining nut. Great one-off tool (need only once or twice in a lifetime). Saved me $70.

To update this post: I found another use for this tool. I works well to remove and install the metal oil filter housing on a 2014 Toyota Sienna.

  2. End User

This fall I purchased a used vehicle which needed some work done with the fuel system. Removing the cap that secures the fuel sending unit was very difficult. One online video suggested using a brass punch to gently and progressively tap the retaining cap off. This did not go as smoothly as the video, due to age, dirt, and other factors.

This tool was purchased and used to much greater effect. It applies forces to 2 sides of the cap at the same time, ensuring that all torque is translated into movement instead of being lost due to friction / resistance. Using this tool I was able to loosen the cap without further damage to it.

Getting the tool into position was a little difficult, as the width of the bar might be too wide for the aperture you have to work within. I recommend playing with the centering a little bit, if this happens to you. Also, loosening the tank retaining straps, was helpful, as I was lowering the tank for other purposes, and found the extra freedom of movement to be helpful.

I don’t think this particular tool is the best value for the money. For about half as much, you can obtain a similar or knock off tool which will do the job just as well. Who knows if the manufacturer is even the same or not these days. Everything is outsourced to China for either our benefit or detriment. Lower costs, less brand control, questionable quality. In the case of this particular tool, it was well made, adjustment points didn’t slip and there was a sturdy accurate sized lug for a 3/8″ drive. I recommend use of a breaker bar, if you have one, but use it gently. Slow consistent torque is better than jerking or “hammered” movements.

  3. Christine

This worked great. A lot easier than using a screw driver and hammer and beating the dam thing.

  4. Gabriella Prasse

I used this on a fuel pump that was 17 years old and never touched before that was being hellish to get off (had to use a breaker bar all the way). Worked well enough and got the pump unscrewed. It just slipped a little from it’s set position. Definitely not professional level, nor would it stand up to regular use. But it’s good for the DIYer that isn’t dealing with fuel pumps regular. Useful to have

  5. Cory

Worked great on my dodge dakota fuel tank. I put it on the lock ring with the adjusting bolts on the tool loose then squeezed them together as i tightened them. I chewed off a few lock ring notches due to it being so tight but then i tried tapping on one of the arms of the tool with a hammer while turning the tool and boom the lock ring came loose. As a technician this is an awesome tool for the job for only $20 and shipped to my mailbox. No need to wait for the box to come to the door.

  6. Cynthia

It works perfectly on any of the ring style fuel pump/sending unit lock rings. All that is needed is a 12mm wrench to set the width of the arms and a 3/8″ drive ratchet with extension.

  7. Dale

Heavy duty. Easy to use. Easy to remove fuel pump lock ring. Didn’t slip at all. It’s adjustable so it fits very well.

  8. Jairo

Tool fits and works perfectly, good price.

  9. D. E. F.

I had to change out the old fuel pump in my gas tank, and needed this spanner wrench to open the large screw on ring on the top of the tank. I had the adjustable arms of the wrench fully extended, and the wrench fit just right. I could attach my breaker bar to the center, and it broke loose easy. Priceless tool.

  10. Cory

durable quality and easy to adjust. it’s also convenient because you can attach a socket wrench to it very easily.
