I’ve used Schumacher SP1296 trickle chargers for many years now, on multiple vehicles and pieces of equipment. Recently I switched all of them to the NOCO GENIUS5 and it’s better in every way!
On all of the Schumacher chargers I’ve had, (and that’s been a LOT of them) the cord has eventually frayed and broken where it exits the charging unit. On the NOCO, the cord has a rubber reinforcement where it exits the unit, extending the life of the cord. I’ve included photos of the NOCO (black) and the Schumacher (red) for reference. The Schumacher chargers I’ve had were dependable and functioned well, but their cord design was a major design flaw for me. Multiple times, It forced me to replace the units before I should have needed to buy new ones.
The NOCO is slightly heavier and more compact in size than the Schumacher. The control has more functions and is easy to use. The NOCO display is aesthetically more pleasing and easier to read than the Schumacher. The NOCO also has an on/off switch which is nice. I always use the eyelets to connect to the battery. The charger connection to the eyelet cord has a click type plug to lock it in place, unlike the Schumacher which just presses together. Should you want to use the battery clips, the NOCO clips are bigger and stronger than those on the Schumacher.
The only negative aspect of the NOCO that I found was that, according to their user manual, “This product is designed to work in ambient temperatures between -4°F and 104°F”. This has not been a problem for me, even when used outside in northern Vermont. It does get below zero here, but typically not for extended periods of time. As long as the charger is kept on the battery, and it’s always fully charged, that temperature limitation hasn’t been an issue for me.
Overall, the NOCO GENIUS5 appears to be a higher quality and better built charger than the Schumacher SP1296. I am very satisfied with their product, and I highly recommend it.
Excellent –
I’ve had this item for 2 years now. And I have to say it is one of the best purchases I’ve made.
Background: I have a older car, that’s kept outside here in toronto, The winter’s here can be pretty bad. My car battery is not the greatest, and I found my battery was always draining. Constantly needed a jump. I looked at the big suitcase backpack looking ones, that CAA uses, then I saw this tiny noco. I’m glad I took the risk, it’s paid for itself many times.
Pros: it works. It’s boosted my car, when the battery was completely dead.
-The safety feature, meaning the electrics won’t flow, if it’s on the wrong positive or negative, was nice for those times when I was in a rush not paying attention
-my model had a boost mode, so when I would activate it, it would force start my battery.
-very quick. I always feel a little less than human, with people judging me when I have to jumpstart my car, I’m sure nobody cares, but I still feel a bit inadequate. This jump starts my car almost immediately.
-this thing is tiny, I keep it in my glove box, it does what those huge jumper boxes that the professionals have, but since technology is so fantastic, they’re able to make it so small but so powerful
-I’m really impressed with the charge, I charged it once and it lasted over a year, with monthly use. I did recharge it just to be safe at the end of the first year. But I probably could have left it and it would have worked fine, there is a battery indicator as well.
Cons: When I pull it out to help strangers restart their car, they look at me a little bit crazy thinking this little item can help. Then they ask me, where they can get one minutes later 🙂
Recommendation:
If you’re someone who needs to jumpstart their car regularly, this thing is a lifesaver.
Not only am I able to jumpstart my car when I need it fast and safely, I was able to help other strangers, simply because there wasn’t a lot to hook up. It’s a small unit and putting it on someone else’s car, and jumping it takes a few minutes. I would 100% buy it again.

Don’t have experience with battery tenders/chargers, this is my first. But I can say very well built compact size. Intuitive setup.
Using it to maintain my jeep wrangler AGM 70AH battery as I travel a lot don’t drive the car that much.
Update:
It has been amazing after few overnight charges the battery recuperated and seems to be back to its full swing. Starting the car now is seamless.

I purchased this NOCO battery charger to maintain the battery in my 2000 Ford Ranger, which isn’t driven very often. I ran the battery fixer mode, and now it’s automatically in maintenance mode, and it’s working perfectly. My truck starts right up every time.
The alligator clip clamps were easy to attach to my battery terminals, and the cord’s locking mechanism ensures a secure connection. The unit operates silently, with no noticeable noise. The indicator lights are intuitive, going from red to green to clearly show the charging status. The instructions provide detailed information about the indicators and modes, though I primarily use the maintenance mode. The charger itself is compact and easy to store.
This NOCO charger is packed with safety features. It tapers the charge to prevent overcharging, and the cord’s design prevents reverse polarity issues. The instructions also mention that it protects against problems if you accidentally connect the clamps to the wrong terminals.
While not the cheapest option, NOCO has a solid reputation, and in my experience, this charger performs exactly as intended. It’s a reliable and effective way to maintain a vehicle that isn’t driven regularly, providing peace of mind and ensuring my truck is always ready to go.

At the current cost of car batteries, a device like this is remarkably cost-effective in maximizing a battery’s useful life for any vehicle that is only driven rarely or only for short distances.
Simple to use and durable.

I’m very impressed with the NOCO Genius 5! Right out of the box, I could tell this was a high-quality product—it’s solidly built and well-made in Vietnam, not China. The packaging was also outstanding, triple-boxed for protection.
This charger is packed with great features, including compatibility with various battery types, and it works perfectly with AGM batteries. I got it to maintain the battery in a car we don’t drive often, and it does an excellent job keeping it fully charged and ready to go.
Setup was simple, and the smart technology makes charging and maintaining the battery effortless. Overall, a great investment for battery longevity. Highly recommended!

It’s effective. I had an idle car with a drained battery & this recharged the battery so that I can now start the car without jumper cables. It did not come with instructions, so I had to find those online. It’s just annoying because it’s an extra step to making sure I use the thing correctly. The controls/buttons on the device are not intuitive in what they do or which setting I needed. It comes with way too much packaging. It’s like an escape room trying to get the thing out. In the end, though, it did the job I needed it to, and I can recommend it.
