While I could technically say it whistles, that doesn’t mean it gets you to a spot on top dead center, only in the approximate neighborhood, if you have experience using them. If you need exact, then it’s up to you to determine that with accurate tools. While it does help to indicate what the piston/valves are doing to some degree when trying to find TDC on each or every piston to do a leak down test, it’s not what I’d call 100%. My biggest peeve is the hose is so cheap and flimsy, that I almost returned it. But I needed it asap for the whistle only, while I had a hydraulic service replace the entire hose becasue it was so flimsy. On a hot day, I could see it being a source of frustration as is it almost collapses whenever twisted. I don’t mean tight, just firm enough to confirm the o’ring’ is seated. In cooler temps of 83 degrees like when I used it, it’s sticky and soft. Yes, it feels sticky, almost gooey. I can scrape the surface of the hose with my fingernail. With mid to deep or narrow recess to access the spark plug holes, it didn’t cooperate very well or line up easily with it’s flimsy nature and curves. It’s an added risk of introducing other unwanted things into the spark plug threads or cylinder walls while knocking around like that tryin to get it oriented and turning at the same time. I like the idea, but the product could stand some improvements.

Using this is way better than the thumb over the spark plug hole method. It indicates the exact position of the piston in relation to TDC, and it is sensitive enough to detect early exhaust valve closure. I use it a lot, and I will never go back to the old way of finding TDC.
