Michael Schaublin –
Quick and easy to install, and good ride quality. Can’t beat for the price. Put these in another Saturn a year and a half ago and they are holding up great.
Scott –
I needed to replace everything anyway, so I went ahead and got the quick struts. Easy installation, no issues.
If your car has a lot of miles on it, I would recommend getting these. I usually change just the strut at first, but after that you might as well get the quick struts. then you get a new strut mount and coil spring, all assembled, ready to go.

They got the job done, but after 6 months there is a horrible creaking noise coming from the struts on nearly every bump. I thought i was safe from the noise but dont get this product. Save up for a proper build of struts that will last you. Working on returning these hopefully.

The second strut went in with no problems, great product ! That being said: strut #1 was in and bottom bolts tightened when two of the top bolts snapped off, I know the first sounded like the torque wrench snapping so I did it again, I should of snapped the third one off and saved even more time, I did the third one with a box wrench by hand, very lightly and snapppp, aaarrrggghhh ! I replaced the bolts with 3/8 X 16 X 3/4 #9 bolts from lowes with lock washers. I had to compress the spring and loosen the nut but it had just enough clearance. So my 1/2 hr job turned into an all day affair, considering that the local auto store wanted $440 in labor I still consider a positive day was had, good thing I had access to another car though to get extra parts.
Who ever is supplying the little bolts on the top plate should be replaced by teneco or monroe, I’ve been turning wrenchs for 40 yrs and also used to work in a tool and die shop that made dies for header bolts so I know a defective bolt when I get one! Still I love the new ride but if your doing this yourself, make sure you have a spring compressor just in case and whatever you do “BE CAREFULL WITH THE TOP BOLTS” !
Lastly this has nothing to do with amazon, I could of put the car back together and sent the defective unit back and who knows what would of been said back and forth as to the bolts quality? I just ordered the two rear struts and at the price I’m getting them and the difference in ride I am very happy with the end result and “pepbays” can thank their tack on extras of $160 to losing my business, they just couldn’t let go of that hundred bucks, ha saved me $440. Some people have model airplanes, I have my saturn.
Customer X –
This is the only way to replace struts. It is much safer as you do not have to deal with the spring compression tool. Only real problem I had was the people at this small town alignment shop were very rude because they didn’t replace them for me. They did not do a real good job aligning the vehicle. I’m thinking in the future install these right before you need new tires. Drive through the mud and maybe they won’t put 1 and 2 together about the fact the struts are new.

It takes years to build brand loyalty and trust, and just a few cheap parts to destroy it. When I first unboxed these I was very impressed with the build quality, I installed them and torqued the bottom bolts, then moved up to the top to tighten the nuts. That is when the SHTF these cheap nuts that they supplied stripped even before I had a chance to torque them, and so I decided to replace the five I could get back off with the old nuts. And then one of the stems stripped when I was torquing it (23FP) (not really all that much torque). Not impressed at all with the careless disregard they had for the time or the safety of their customers. Not going to go through all the hassle of removing them and returning them. Should have listened to Scotty Kilmer and went with the KYB. I’ll salvage the springs and mount them on some KYB struts. Lesson learned and another once great brand to scratch off any further purchase.
Jeff –
Saturn friends! This is a great strut, however when installing do NOT use the supplied nuts. When you torque them down they WILL snap the head bolts off because Monroe supplies nuts that don’t actually tighten. In short re-use the old ones that are one piece. Other than that great quality, however they like to squeak sometimes but if that doesn’t bother you then you’ll be fine!

I ordered two front Monroe Quick-Struts for a 2000 Saturn SL2. After installation one was ok and the other made a squeak sound every time the vehicle turned to the left or the right. After some investigation it was determined that the squeaking strut was a known issue with the Monroe 171924.
After contacting Monroe I learned that they have since resolved the issue and have updated the part. However they have kept the part number the same and only have added either an ‘*’ or ‘@@’ symbols to the end of the part number on the package to distinguish the difference between the new part and the older defective one.
The problem with the way Monroe labeled the part is that now you can not tell when you are ordering the correct new part or not. All stores either online or brick-and-mortar will tell you only the part number, 171924. Monroe has stated that all 171924 products shipping from them after 7/1/2011 are the corrected version.
I have since returned the defective part and ordered from another online store only to have the same issue again. Now I have ordered from JustSuspension because after speaking with them and Monroe they ship factory direct. So if you want the correct part make sure it is factory direct and not from old stock.
Good luck.

The generation of product that Amazon sent me has an asterisk below the part number, as per the review left by “E” on 8/23/2011. They were easy to install, haven’t made any noise, and quite noticeably improved the handling of my 1992 SL1. The folks at the alignment shop I visited after the installation said that they regularly use Monroe shocks, which further bolstered my confidence in the product.
I’ve downgraded my rating by one star due to production inconsistencies. One of the two shocks I was sent had a “bump stop” that matched the OEM version. The other shock, however, looked different. It was slightly banged up, missing a safety sticker prominently displayed by the other Monroe shock, and had a completely foreign “bump stop” design. Given that I’d never replaced shocks before, this was confusing. I eventually compared it with the picture on Amazon, found that it matched, and realized that Monroe simply has some minor variation in the product’s design and production quality. Nevertheless, I’d buy them again.
