  • REDUCES SAG UNDER LOAD — Ideal for occasionally hauling or towing varying loads; heavy gauge, calibrated coil spring reduces sag when loaded up to 1,200 lbs. (capacity limited by suspension, tires and transmission; see owner’s manual)
  • EXCEPTIONAL HANDLING — Tuned specifically for each application, full-displaced valving automatically adjusts to road extremes to provide ride consistency
  • CONSISTENT RIDE — OE all-weather fluid contains special modifiers to handle extreme temperatures and PTFE-banded piston helps reduce friction between the piston and pressure tube to enhance responsiveness to changing road surfaces
  • LONGER SERVICE LIFE — Self-lubricating fluid seal retains gas and reduces excessive friction against the piston rod to help reduce premature wear while heavy-duty nitrocarburized rod delivers long life
  • IMPROVES PERFORMANCE — Nitrogen gas-charge maintains tire-to-road contact for improved ride and handling by reducing aeration and shock fade

Firstly… the shocks are great! Having a Jeep Cherokee XJ, the 24-year-old, regular-strength leaf springs are getting a little bit, ehrm, saggy. Between this and my need to occasionally tow things, I thought these shocks might be good to help out with my signature Jeep Squat.

Installation is… not a breeze. I’d like to know what executive level brain surgeon at Monroe thought it would be a good idea to ship these uncompressed, but good lord. I ended up using a ratchet strap to compress them to a point where I could get them on because compressing them by hand is… not easy or pleasant.

Once on, though, they’re great! Even under load, the rear end of my XJ is easily two inches higher than it was before, and is back at around its stock height. These shocks don’t feel any stiffer than what was on it (they’re replacing a two-year-old set of Gabriel ProGuard gas-charged shocks). If anything, they feel springier: my XJ feels more like a coil-spring Caprice Estate than it does a leaf-sprung SUV. They bounce back quickly when compressed, and the ride is smooth and consistent, and the ride height doesn’t change much when under load.

One thing to remember is to check clearances. Due to the spring, these shocks are a bit wider at the top than regular shocks. I had to pull back a parking brake cable and move a fuel hose to keep it from rubbing. Otherwise, they work great.

Installed without issues, was worried I would hear them but you don’t. I replaced old leaky air shocks on a 96 Jeep Cherokee Sport. They raised the sagging back of the jeep 1.5″ to level out the jeep nicely. Took about an hour to replace, because of rusty bolts. Do yourself a favor and buy new bolts, they are not included. Also spray your bolts with WD-40 or something the day before you are going to take the old ones out. The single order netted a matching pair of shocks.

  3. My Two Cents

After relocating my lower mount to a higher position I had no travel in my rear shocks.
I replaced my oversized shocks with these as a temporary solution until I get 8″lifted springs and can utilize the longer shocks then.
These standard length shocks give me proper travel and also slightly more weight handling due to their cheap coilover design. It’s very minimal and they can be compressed by hand buy it actually lifted my rear about a 1/2″.
They were cheap enough to be a temporary solution.

Brought my Jeep back to original ride height and installed easily with no modifications.

Threw these on my 98 jeep Cherokee, lifted the back end an inche or so. Suspension feels way better then the stock shocks

Installed on my 96 Cherokee with ageing rear springs before when I towed even a light aluminum boat early mornings everyone high beam flashed me even know I was on low beam I considered adjusting headlights lower. But after recently replacing front shocks was looking for a set for the rear as well.
When I seen these and read the reviews decided to give them a try. Solved all the problems. Raised rear of vehicle about 3 inches just sitting there. No adjusting of headlights and no more high beams flashing from other drivers. no noticeable difference in the ride great bolt on solution if you tow or haul a hatchback full of gear.

Bought these for a 20 year old Cherokee. The rear leaf springs were starting to sag, as well as the original shocks being bad. These shocks raised the Jeep a good 2″, and it now does a good job of pulling our boat again. One note though…the Cherokee has nuts that are welded onto the frame at the factory. These almost always break. Knowing this, I ordered an adapter that is available to quickly fix this (Amazon search: JEEP Cherokee XJ Rear Bar Pin Flag Nut fix Rear Upper Shock Mount 4WD/2WD). I took the shocks and adapters to my local garage, and he was able to change them in 30 minutes (saving me money).

I bought front shocks and rear shocks. I also bought new leaf springs and coil springs. I was happy wi the the new suspension ride and overall height.

    But …

The rear shocks have already failed. Not even a year has gone by. Plus, I only put 5k miles on the new suspension (I commute to work via train).

Now I have to go through the hassle of warranty and R/R these shocks.

    Very disappointed.

  9. My Two Cents

Installed these on my 99 Cherokee Sport along with some new Crown Automotive rear leaf springs. The combination of both (rear shocks and leaf springs) lifted the jeep ~ 3 to 3.5 inches. I had also put new coil springs from Crown on the front, but the back was so high I had too add 1.75 inch spacers on the front springs to level out the Jeep. The Jeep looks and rides really nice now. I can go over a very bumpy road with no problem. At first the ride was a little stiff, but within 1-month it smoothed out and it rides very nice now. I had some drive line vibrations when I accelerated so I dropped the transfer case with a Rubicon Express 3/4 inch transfer case drop. The transfer case drop was very inexpensive, easy to install and the vibrations are gone. Overall I’m ecstatic with the result.

What can I say, overload shocks can be nice, depending on the application. My leaf springs on my ’91 XJ Loredo were sagging BAAAAAD. I figured, I’d get these to give it pep back in the step and holy cow! Right to bolting on, after lowering my jeep and they settled- 2 INCHES OF REAR RIDE HEIGHT! Note, that was half a tank of gas and a spare tire in the back, and after a full tank, lowered a bit to like 1.75 inches. Not a bad thing at all.

    BIG BUT NOTE;
Since these shocks are designed for heavy load, it can make your ride feel stiff in the rear, bouncy even because of the coil overs. I wanted something that could last, plus I wanted to be able to handle a large tow load, don’t plan rock crawling with this Jeep, so they do what they need to do. Heavier loads in the back such as a spare(s), tools and a full tank of gas (to label a few) makes the ride feel a lot smoother.

Overall, excellent quality, it’s monroe and you get what you pay for. If your concerned about it going beyond the OEM ride height, you’ll be fine no need to worry there. At most 2 inches of lift from stock factory height. These are a really nice ‘fix’ to bad leaf springs, though don’t get them if you want a really smooth ride on the road.
