I put these on an 09 GMC Canyon. And I got them to work. Keep in mind I pulled this part number directly from KYB’s site and searched Amazon for the part number. I also checked the part numbers matched what I ordered before installing. Also there is no left or right struts called out by KYB for ANY model 1 gen GMC canyon.
90% of the problem wasn’t with the actual fitment on the truck. Once I swapped over the coil spring and still had the spring compressor on the coil spring is when I noticing problems. I noticed 2 things. First, the threads are 10mm x 1.25 instead of 1.5. Well one shock didn’t come with a 10mm x 1.25 nut and the other did. So I had to run to the store to supply that myself. All the bags where sealed, so the hardware was missed at the factory itself. Second, the distance from the lip of where the boot bottoms out, to the end of the threads is too short for the bushing that are actually supplied with the strut itself. Yes, I was “reading” the “directions” (aka bad pictures). One strut I managed to pre-compress the supplied bushing and get the nut on to the strut shaft and properly tightened. The other strut I just couldn’t make it happen so I had to put the factory already mashed oem bushings back on. That was probably the right thickness. There is now 2 problems with this. I have 2 sets of bushings on the truck, one set in all actuality already worn out even though it fits. 2 I can’t actually tell if I have equal torque on both of the shaft nuts because the bushings are not equal stacks. Will it be just fine? Probably. If I did anything with this truck that actually mattered I would have some high dollar struts on there.
The last part that actually I’m a little more concerned with is the passenger side install. Putting it back on the truck the stops for the coil spring is not clocked correctly. So once I had the top lined up where is should be, the bottom that attaches to the lower control was canted. so I had to torque it over to slide it in where it was supposed to go. The I had to really jack with it to JUST the right spot or the hole in the lower control would rip up the threads to my bolt. This is the part I wonder if there will be any binding or improper wear.
So why did I not return these? If it was a local parts store I would have or tried another brand or something. But I’m kinda in a hard spot when I take off work to do this, it flat sucks to do this, I wouldn’t take them off unless I had another pair in hand. Really what can you do if this vehicle HAS to be driven the next day? I’m not putting the wore out factory stuff back on there to swap these out. I may just have to pay more for some stuff and get them at a local place in case this happens again. But sometimes EVERYBODY in the entire town decides to work on the same thing you do that weekend. When you buy the last one locally you’re in the same place.
Any customer service action on this better come with a voucher to take it to a shop. This cost me leave to do it for one. 2 I did this on leave instead of enjoying my leave. 3 I’m not keen on fixing other people mistake, so as you can see it would probably be cheaper for a shop to do it. We haven’t talked about replacement struts yet.
I should probably give this a 2, but they’re on there and working. And I really just don’t feel like doing this again. I really hope in 50,000 miles I forget how bad this is because I don’t think I could afford to get them done by anyone. I usually never can.
