This K&N 33-2936 filter is an exact drop in for my stock 2009 Cooper S! I always find myself turning to K&N for my first “upgrade” to my vehicle. It’s a nice performance alternative to traditional paper filters and not as costly as a true Cold Air Intake system.
A couple notes… 1) I would say that my Mini gained a slightly throatier sound starting about 4,000rpm and above. 2) I can also hear my stock blow off valve just a little better now. 3) I did not feel a significant gain in power from just adding this drop-in. Sorry guys and gals, it’s just a new air filter not a shot of nitrous. Is the engine breathing better? Yes. Will this K&N compliment an aftermarket exhaust? Definitely. But, if you are looking for a more aggressive sound on the intake side though, definitely go with a true open element CAI.
Overall I like K&N because the maintenance intervals on them are long and the life of the filter will outlast the car. I take mine out every 10K miles to knock out any debris and visually check it. K&N includes a little card in the package stating that the first cleaning doesn’t need to happen until 50K miles though.

Bought this filter for my 2009 Peugeot THP150 LeMans (same engine as the Mini Cooper S)
The good:
she definitely feels more responsive, and the dumpvalve sound is slightly louder. also, now i can hear that turbo sucking in the air (subtle, but definitely noticeable). I kinda do wanna say that it feels like she pulls a little harder.
But let’s be honest:
my car has about 9k on the clock now, and still had the stock filter with which the car came. now since it is fairly dusty where I live, the stock filter was a little dirty (not nearly as much as i thought it would’ve been though). so, is the extra little pull due to the K&N, or simply the fact that it now has a “clean” filter? perhaps both
Verdict:
I do feel the $50 was worth it. As for performance, like i said, it “feels” like there’s an improvement, but it might just be due to a clean filter. As far as fuel economy goes; there is a SUBSTANTIAL improvement. Usually I can get anywhere between 500-600km (310-370 miles) on a single 50L (13 gal) tank. This gave you a fuel economy of around 7.1L/100km (14km/L , 33mpg). After the filter has been fitted, my fuel consumption has improved to roughly 6.7L/100km (15km/L , 35 mpg); which gives me around 700km (435 miles) on a single tank
Let’s keep in mind:
Forced Induction cars (i.e turbo- or super-charged) will benefit more from any upgrade or modification. So, if your car is normally-aspirated (non-charged), your improvements will not be as great as mine; but you will definitely see an improvement.
For the performance side of things; the most important thing about tuning or modding a car is to match performance parts. i.e a car’s performance is due to the entire system working together, not just 1 specific part. So even if it is that the new filter does not provide much gain on an otherwise stock system; once its coupled with other mods, it may contribute considerably. only time will tell

I have been using K&N filters on my cars for decades. They provide a long-term solution to filtering. I clean them once a year and they work perfectly.

If you’re looking for a good filter, this is it. Most factory air boxes are more efficient than aftermarket boxes/tubes these days, so many times, putting a K&N in the factory box is a better – and cheaper! – option than replacing the stock tubes/boxes with something that may “look cooler,” but could actually be COSTING you HP/torque rather than giving you any gains. It is louder than stock, especially the blowoff valve whistle, and has a bit more growl in the low end. Also appears to eliminate a lot of the turbo lag this car has when first getting moving. Good performance upgrade for a good price, plus this filter is reusable/washable, which means less waste going into landfills than the factory paper filters that just get thrown out.

After ordering two other K&N filters that were supposed to fit my 2013 Mini Cooper S Paceman JCW All4, this one actually fits. It’s probably the same filter as in my 2013 Mini Cooper S Coupe JCW but I couldn’t remember its part number.
The hardest part of the install is moving the top of the air box enough to pull the old filter out. I had to remove the three screws holding the top down plus the two screws that hold the air hose in place. I also loosened the clamp for the air hose allowing the plastic adapter to rotate while attached to the air hose. The top of the air box can not be completely remove because there is a cable tied to it and that limits how far the top can be moved.
Re-attaching the top of the air box is done by first properly seating it in the lock tabs at its rear, installing the three screws that secure the top, then rotating the air hose adapter into proper alignment with the housing. You then install the air hose adapter screws. The final step is to tighten the hose clamp.
