I”m preparing for early spring drive in my “98 vette;upon inspection heard cricket sound under the hood. It stops after engine warm up. I founded out that the drive belt idler needed replacing. I only use OEM parts. Amazon delivered on time as promise for my timely repair.

I installed this main idler pulley on my C5 Corvette hoping to rid the car of a light squeak upon start up that I was finally able to hear after taking care of the major source of squeak (the water pump). Not a huge deal, as it hardly noticed and it goes away within a minute or two. I had already replaced the tension idler pulley, so this pulley became the prime suspect. As it turned out my idler was just fine- but I was able to compare the original pulley, shield and bolt to this replacement part and it is an exact match. I had read numerous fails by others who had bought aftermarket pulleys and I elected to spare myself the headaches of bad fit and having to shim with a washer as others had experienced. I couldn’t be more pleased with the part. Finding AC/Delco OEM parts for the C5 is getting increasingly difficult and I have had to resort to the AC/Professional for things such as the water pump and brakes. The toughest thing about the install of this main idler was trying to find a good access position for my socket. A short socket or flat wrench won’t work- you will need a socket a couple of inches long and it takes some threading to get the wrench on the nut, but once a purchase is found and the wrench can be turned- it is actually pretty easy (I did all the work from the driver’s side- if I had been smart I would have replaced this pulley while I replaced the water pump…but hindsight is 20/20). I expected it to be difficult to get the new part on, but it was actually quite easy- provided you have some good lighting. One tip I would leave you with is when reinstalling the serpentine belt- get the belt fully in position, but save the water pump for last; I learned that the hard way when I replaced the serpentine belt a couple of years ago. The bell shape of the large water pump pulley makes it very easy to slide the belt into place while relieving the tension on the tension idler pulley. Even though this part did not solve my squeak (I’m now thinking the squeak is coming from AC belt/pulleys- so the search will go on- I’ll next pull the main accessory serpentine belt and see if that’s indeed the case- and if not on the AC belt, then it means it has to be the alternator or steering).

Original part replacement on a 2000 Corvette LS1 engine.

So apparently there’s a few issues with replacing this on an LS1. I ordered a new replacement bearing from two separate sources to use with the old hardware but neither one worked I heard people say don’t use the front dust cover or don’t use the back dust cover I also heard that there is a newer style bracket out for the ls1 then I found this.. this was an OEM replacement almost or maybe identical to what I had taken off just try to remember which direction and how the dust covers came off of the old one I slapped it on torqued it down to spec and I haven’t had an issue since.

came in a gm box and with front and back plate idler pulley feels sturdy and heavy /solid this is the main idler pulley not the ac idler pulley by the way i beleive this is the real og idler pulley or a really good fake/replica

This is the fixed idler pulley for the main drive belt (water pump, alternator, power steering pump). It is NOT the one for the air conditioner belt. This is a common mistake. The GM parts manual clearly states that this part number (12564401) is for the main belt pulley replacement. Some ads for the same thing also state in bold print that this is NOT the a/c pulley. Now that this is cleared up, this is a perfect replacement that you cannot get from most other places. The one available at most auto parts stores is a substitute made by Dayco and is NOT a perfect fit. That one does not even have the dust covers or bolt and is not the same width.
