Very complete kit and descent instructions. Had absolutely everything needed for a good price. Water pump. Belt had useful markings, all pulleys and tensioner were included, helpful red plastic thing to ease the belt on. Came with gaskets and thread locker. Only thing I could add is a thermostat. Recommend this kit.

As told to me by my husband who actually did the work… This kit was excellent. It took several hours to complete the job but our Subaru has been running better than it has for several years. We’re going to make sure the car lasts at least until 200,000 miles.

All parts fit my Legacy just fine. The tensioner bolt broke after 2k miles and the timing belt came off the cam while the car was driving. We are hoping that there is no engine damage. Filing a warranty claim with Gates and we shall see how it goes. The kit was installed by a shop, so they have the install record.

This is a very critical review, so be prepared.
When I ordered this kit, I was of the impression that high quality parts would be included. The product is supposed to be sourced from mostly Japanese suppliers with the belt made in America and the water pump being made in China. But everything except for the belt is made in China. The belt is American, and it does appear to be a high quality product. However, the same simply can not be said about the rest of the components.
On the outside of the box, it VERY CLEARLY reads that most parts are made in Japan. See the pictures included. When the box is opened, you will quickly realize that not a single thing is from Japan. And while I personally believe that China is capable of making perfectly fine products, the items in this kit do not come close to meeting that criteria. Especially the tensioner. The tensioner is the cheapest excuse for a car part I have ever seen. The tensioner is made from a miserably low grade pot metal alloy with unintelligible markings, not even a country stamp, and the mounting bolt is even worse. I wouldn’t use this bolt on a go-kart, much less a nice car.
The water pump doesn’t come close to matching any form of OEM quality. Or even second hand parts quality. It is made from the same nightmare grade tin as the tensioner, and the impeller is poorly stamped from another mystery metal and lousily bolted on with seemingly no attention paid to staying within tolerances or making sure that there is a consistent gap between the impeller and the body. The dimensions are not at all even and that is mind blowing. The conical surface under the impeller has a jagged gash in it. Not something I’d consider to be well made. The mating surfaces also contain sharp gouges where the not metal/not rubber/not plastic/what-even-is-this gasket is supposed to go. My guess is that the gasket would be cut rather quickly by this through expansion and contraction.
But the worst has yet to come. You see, Gates is aware of this. They know that there are loads and buckets of these sub-par, mislabeled, highly incorrect kits floating around through all the vendors out there. And they don’t seem to care. I mean… they *really* do not seem to care at all. Not only do they seem to perfectly content with having their brand name on these parts that wish they could live up to Yugo standards of quality, they seem to think it’s a nice bargaining chip to “warn” you of the consequences of not having purchased your product from the prestigious and highly honored establishments that are O’Reilly Auto Parts and NAPA. (Side note- have you ever tried to talk to anyone at one of these stores? I’ve seen more concern and product knowledge in the eyes of a goat gnawing on a discarded bottle of vodka than I’ve ever encountered with the employees of these places. Hence is the reason I opted to buy online.) I was told that, yes, the price will be substantially higher in an auto parts store, but it is worth it. Why? Because when this happens with a kit from an auto parts store (remember- the employees of these places may moonlight as trash ingesting connoisseur goats), at least you’ll have a physical location where you can go and complain about this. You get what you pay for. Personally, I liken this more to extortion than product quality standards, but what do I know? I’m just the customer. So don’t even bother trying to contact Gates about this. They’ll ignore you on all mediums except when you finally get through to their lethargic customer support team, who will promptly tell you that you made a mistake purchasing their product [by not going to stores with hilariously abysmal customer service and astronomical prices], they know this is a thing, they don’t care, so go pound salt. Duly noted, Gates.
In all, I recommend staying away from this product. Unless you dig the idea of grenading the engine of your car. Then it’s a great choice for you. For its part, Amazon has been outstanding and picked up the slack that Gates unceremoniously left behind with their mix and match vital car parts hobby kit. For that, I can never thank Amazon enough. But Amazon has to take the financial hit on behalf of Gates’ apathy and deception. That eventually leads to higher prices for the rest of us.

Great price

Water pump had some scratches but other wise everything worked well. Definitely prime the valve on pulley prior to installation

This is the third or fourth of these kits I have used to perform timing belt changes on my Subarus, and I have been pleased with every one of them, and also with the price-a serious discount compared to buying the parts individually, and also the convenience of having all of the necessary parts in one box. The kit also comes with a spacer for installing the guard above the crankshaft pulley and some information about installation and torque specifications, though I think it better to rely on official Subaru information for such things. The parts come from several manufactures-the belt from Gates, the pulleys and tensioner from Japanese companies-they look just like the originals. The pump looks a little different from the original-the impeller is different and the “fit and finish” of the machined surfaces gives it a less elegant look, but I have not had any trouble with them. It also comes with a gasket for the coolant pump. You will need to purchase a thermostat and gasket as well as coolant to complete the job. These kits have served me well for several years and hundreds of thousands of miles on 2 vehicles. Make sure you do your research if you haven’t done this repair before, for there are some tricks to it, and a few common mistakes. If you have the time, tools and skill to do the job, these Gates kits can save you a lot of money compared to paying a mechanic.

Everything fit perfectly, seems like great quality and came with “ok” install manual. Word of advice: when installing belt have a buddy help to keep the belt in place while installing tensioner or use some clamps and of course CHECK FOR INTERFERENCE
10/10 for the product: great quality and awesome savings!!
