Fit my smart car perfectly and I’m happy. 2008 Smart Passion Coupe air filter. These take a little patience to install so follow the online video instructions and you’ll not have any problems. Try to just follow your instincts and it will challenge your instincts!

Except for oil filters, I usually buy Fram.

This air filter fits our 2012 Smart fortwo (US) perfectly. Installation is a bit tricky, though. The Smart’s engine compartment is very tight on space. The way I did it, first completely remove the rubber air duct leading into the air filter housing. The metal clamps around the duct should be fully opened/removed, then quite a bit of hard squeezing and pulling will get the duct out. Once that’s done, the air filter housing lid can be unlatched and guided out with some careful angling. Replacing the filter itself is trivial then. When putting things back together, you may run into trouble relatching the lid; getting the lid to close completely requires again careful angling and aligning. Maybe the rim of the Fram filter is slightly thicker than OEM (I didn’t measure), but it does fit if aligned correctly, and the lid can be properly relatched without force. When reclamping the rubber duct, be sure to clamp only where there is plastic under the rubber, and don’t overtighten the clamps (these are air seals, not oil seals). Search Youtube for relevant videos if you prefer visuals. I found at least one that matched my Smart model and my procedure closely.
BTW, for this job, the Smart service manual calls for removal of the “resonance chamber” (the plastic manifold on the other side of the rubber duct mentioned above). I would not recommend doing that for several reasons: The screw holding that chamber in place is very difficult to reach, and, more importantly, two smaller tubes would need to be disconnected, which aren’t easy to move and one of which is attached by what seems to be a non-reusable clip (the manual is silent on details there). Admittedly, with the resonance chamber out of the way, getting to the air filter would then be really easy. But the resonance chamber removal looks like a frustrating 1-2 hour job (unless you have specialty tools, I guess) and there is a non-zero chance something will break. Much easier to coax the rubber duct out.

Perfect for the job, which is why we have reordered these over and over and over and over again for our family’s mini fleet of Smart cars.

It’s a good filter recommend to change often. But better then paying for the Mercedes price for one.
EvilWays –
Perfect fit for my smart car, obviously better quality than the stock filter.

It does the job.

I am not a car mechanic and it took me forever to change out the air filter since it was the first time doing it
in such a little car that has an engine in the back. For my last car, a Mitsubishi, it takes only 2-3 minutes to change out an engine air filter.
Fits in my Smart Car, and I can feel my car’s engine functioning better after changing the filter (after 60k miles… lol).
Anyway, it won’t matter soon since I am trading it in for a BMW X3, which comes with maintenance package.
But yes, people, remember to change your air filter every year or 12k miles, don’t be like me!
