In my opinion there are better stropping/polishing compounds available but this will do what it’s supposed to.

Nice product. Packaging was as if was old stock but finaly decided was discoloration from the product itself. Was easy to apply to my strop and gave a nice medium toothy edge. Worth buying over anonymous green compound that is being sold.

  3. Rick C.

Easy to use will last a long time

I expect to get a good deal of work done with this. I will be ordering it again once I wear it down to a nub.

As a hobby woodcarver I’ve tried many different stropping compounds including waxy sticks, powders, etc, etc. Some were decent and others were downright awful to the point of ruining a good strop. Over the years I’ve narrowed by sharpening compound down to two. Using a double sided horsehide strop, I have one side I keep coated with cheap Harbor Freight green compound that I use first in my stropping routine. Next I step up to the Flexcut Gold coated strop to put that near-mirror finish on my carving knives. There is a noticeable difference in the two compounds. The Flexcut Gold is definitely the winner and I have no plans to ever stop using it! It’s a bit more expensive but a stick of this stuff will likely last me the rest of my life!

This honing compound, made by Formax manufacturing for Flexcut, according to the MSDS data sheet, is composed of 30-60% Aluminum oxide, and 5-10% Stearic acid.

I don’t care what the color is, or of what it is made – all I care about is how wonderfully it keeps my carving knives extremely sharp. It certainly does that!!!!

It applies to the strop leather without exerting much effort, and is just a pleasure to use.

This IS a “verified purchase”, BTW.

    The stuff works.

Polished up a couple knives and chisels.

    Should last a long time.

I bought this for a honing compound. It works great. I use it both on a hand strop and a power stop. It produces an extremely fine edge. There is a yellow compound that is used for soft metals like brass or copper, don’t confuse this with the Flexcut Gold, they are not the same thing. I am doing woodcarving and this is the best I have found for my tools. ANY hand tool with an edge needs to be as sharp as possible, so in addition to my carving tools I use it on my planes and any blade I have.

Flexcut has more of a chalk texture than your typical “clay” texture of stropping compounds. That means when you load it, it won’t change the color of your strop drastically which makes your think it’s not applying well which is not the case. It loads well and works well you just can’t rely on the color of the compound going into the leather. Great all around compound for stainless or carbon steels and sharpens with ease. I’ll probably never use anything else

    Genuine product.
