Recently picked up a ’92 Escort with 1.9L engine. that after 100k original miles the factory valve cover gasket no longer sealed correctly and was leaking oil down onto the exhaust manifold. This gasket and grommet set sealed the old engine right up.
I’m docking a star because even though it seems to be working, to me it seemed to be stamped upside down. That is, the valve cover has a recess where the factory seal pushes up into, but the new seal has the single rib face downward into the head and two ribs facing up into the head, neither of which seat into the recess in the valve cover.
The new seal does have locating ridges at intervals around the perimeter of the gasket to hold the cover in place, but it just doesn’t sit well with me… Call it intuition, trick knee, whatever, I’m docking it a star because it’s made me worry.

This gasket set will fit the following SOHC (Single Overhead Camshaft) Ford Engines: 1.9L (1991-1996) and the 2.0L SPI (Split Port Induction) found in Ford Escort, Mercury Tracer and some of the early Ford Focus.
I agree with the other reviewers as the gasket looks as it has the ribs upside down.
The original (factory) gasket was made out of black silicone rubber and it had a rib only on the side facing up and into a groove on the valve cover ; the other side (facing the cylinder head) was flat.
The fact that it was so flexible made it harder to stay fit into the groove, before installing the valve cover onto the cylinder head; the only way to do it properly was to use some thick and sticky grease (like the Lucas “Red N Tacky”) on the valve cover, before attaching the gasket to it.
Both the aftermarket gaskets made by Victor Reinz and by Fel-Pro are rigid, look different than the OEM (even if it does not make technical sense to me) and the installation procedure must be followed as per their manufacturer’s instructions.

– The valve cover gasket must be placed on the cylinder head first (!) with the rubber locating tabs (molded into the gasket to aid in positioning) facing down to the cylinder head.
– Always replace the 3 (three) valve cover grommets included with the set.
– torque the three center valve cover bolts to 9-11.5 Nm (70-101 inch lbs)
Note: The primary “raised” sealing bead on this gasket faces the cylinder head side, the 1/4 inch wide “land” area sealing bead is the valve cover side.

All I can say is that the gasket will fit and it will seal without leaking.

At least one reviewer mentioned that the gasket was made backwards/ upside down. Well I thought he was mistaken possibly due to inexperience or error. But I was wrong! The gasket is made upside down. I installed it anyway because thebox says “non returnable if opened” I don’t know if it leaks yet because I have other work to do on the car. But I will write to fel pro for their take on it. If it leaks, amazon is going to hear from me for a refund. Either way I will post the results.
Update:
With no response from Fel-Pro I can only say that it doesn’t leak, but I don’t know how long it will last. It is definitely ot made incorrectly in my humble opinion.

Arrived in a 48″ by 24″ by 6″ box…… the most oversized box I’ve ever received in comparison to the product… a few bags of air were tossed in with it but that’s it.
Gasket is the poly type and though I followed all directions to the T and tightened VC bolts to factory torque specs I have a small leak at the drivers front side of the head. Now that’s not to say the valve cover isnt warped or something so its hard to pin the fault down on the gasket entirely. Now the factory specifies that no adhesives or rtv are to be used with this gasket. Ill be pulling it all apart cleaning it and applying rtv to see if I can get it to seal 100%

This gasket set only fits a 1.9 tracer or ford escort. Although Amazon says it fits my car it does not because the valve cover grove is on the wrong side. It you have a 2.0L this is not for you. Oh well live and learn. I hope this will help others. Was great ship and is a great part just not right for my car.
