The gaskets and spark plug seals worked fine on my mom’s 2001 Toyota Solara V6 (1MZ-FE) Engine. The problem arrived when I attempted to use the replacement valve cover bolt washers.
My mother’s Solara has shouldered M6 Aluminum bolts. Toyota Part number: Toyota Part Number 90080-10288
Unfortunately, the washers in this kit do not work with these bolts (the bolt hole is too small). I could have perhaps opened them up with a drill, but I don’t really have a good setup for that.
According to factory specs, these bolts are to be replaced when doing a valve cover job, so I called the local Toyota Dealership for a quote. Their price was $72.00 for 16 bolts ($4.50 a pop).
After researching online, I decided to go with purchasing 5/16th” aluminum washers from the local hardware store. The washers give enough space so the bolt shoulders do not bottom out on the engine head, thus giving enough clearance to torque the bolts to 71 inch/pounds, without the threat of snapping off the bolt head. I had to make sure I got aluminum bolts (kind of a specialty item) because I did not want dissimilar metal corrosion by using steel and aluminum. I ended up using some blue loctite on the bolts, and now I’m hoping for the best. I’ll come back and comment if there is a problem with this solution.
I realize the description does not specify that this kit works with a Toyota Solara, but the Amazon compatibility tracker did give me a “These Items Fit Your Vehicle” go-ahead. Not sure who I should blame for that.
