Absolutely garbage. When it was delivered, I put it on and tried starting the tractor. Motor turned over several times and then the starter quit working. I bench tested it to verify, and surely enough it was dead.

Bought this for an older ’68 Sears garden tractor I was restoring. Turns that old Tecumseh motor over no problem. It’s not an exact fit as it claims, just a lil common sense and a few shims and it will do the job.

Very good price on the starter. Two problems kept it from a 5 star rating. The dust cap was a little too long for the shaft, so when it clicked on it would not stay locked on when the shaft spun. This trouble was cleared by filing off about an 1/8th of an inch of the bottom of the plastic, this allows the inner ridge to lock over the ridge on the shaft, so the cap will not come off. The second problem is the long end of the two case bolts is on the gear end of the starter. This keeps the starter from fitting flush against the mounting surface. I used a diamond disk on my Dremel to cut the ends off. Once installed the starter works fine.

** 2-9-14 Update. The starter failed after a couple of months. The spring
retainer cup and the cog that drives out the gear against the spring are made of some kind of pot metal that destroyed itself after probably no more than 100 to 125 uses of the starter. Considering my original Tecumseh starter lasted well over 30 years, this was pretty bad. Amazon offered me a 50% refund if I wanted to keep the starter (It originally cost about $36 because it had damaged packaging), so I purchased some used parts to replace the defective ones and if I can get another dust cap I will be ready to try it out.

was a great price was shipped and received in great time would buy from Discount Starter and Alternator again. installed in minutes and have had no problems great product

I had to replace the end bushing it a brand new starter. It shows that price isn’t everything I have found out that this was bought from china and their quality control just doesn’t stand up.

  6. Brian McGrath

When installing it, I had to bend the upper bracket slightly to line up with the bolt hole in the engine but once that was done it went on easily and the engine fired up first try.

  7. Amazon Customer

This starter worked one time, didn’t turn the motor over fast enough to start the motor. The next try, wouldn’t turn the motor at all, would only squeal. Junk right out of the gate.

  8. Amazon Customer

    great price works good

  9. ray koziatek

the motor was a 1969 and had to elongate 1 hole 1/16th of a inch …other than that it was perfect
