Situation: Locking and unlocking my car generated a loud grinding noise in the liftgate on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. After some research, it sounded like the actuator was going out.
Result: Replacement was fairly easy (you’ll probably break some tabs) and took about 20 minutes. You’ll need a star shape torque screwdriver, same one as the one use in the front door, as well as a Philip screwdriver and a door trim tab remover. Look at your front door handle inside the car. That’s the one screw holding the entire unit in place. The unit looks identical to the original and the make materials were pretty much also the same. Furthermore, it’s soo quiet that I can’t even hear it from the front seat. I believe the lever are plastic (same as the OEM), while the rest of the box is metal. The lever does feel solid and looks like it will last longer than the actual motor inside the actuator. Even tough I broke some tabs, they were still reusable. The OEM actuator lasted me 10 years, so I am hoping this one will last me another 10 years. By then I’ll probably be at 300K miles and it’ll be time to get a new car. (Crossing my fingers)
Will definitely recommend this unit, which will save you about 25-30 off OEM, while giving you the same level of quality.

I installed this part about a year ago (summer 2012) after the rear hatch on my 2000 Grand Cherokee locked us out permanently. Actually installing this part couldn’t have taken more than 20 minutes, it fit perfectly and has worked flawlessly ever since. Easily $40 cheaper than the local dealer wanted for the OEM part. One tip – before trying to install this part, do a Google search first and find a website that describes how to do it and maybe shows some pictures. Also, you probably want to have some spares of the little plastic clips that hold the interior panel to the hatch, as it’s almost impossible to remove that panel without breaking a few of those clips. I was very careful and still broke about 1/2 of them. They aren’t made to be re-used so it’s simply unavoidable that a few will break.

Selected this replacement unit because of the price and rating. Was quite easy to replace on my 2001 Grand Cherokee once I got the tailgate panel off. Worked wonderfully. Make certain you purchase the plastic retainer clips to replace the tailgate panel. They will break when you remove it. Had to order them on line since I couldn’t find them locally. Amazon has them available. This saved me a ton of money doing it myself rather than having the shop repair it.

This was easy to install in my liftgate — total time spent was 1-2 hours, which included going inside and watching youtube videos on the subject. The local Jeep dealer said it would cost $204 when I called for a quote, but after I actually dropped the vehicle off they didn’t have time so they called and said “We recommend replacing this and that wiring harness and the real price is $1000”. I saved serious money doing this myself, and so can you.
One tip — it is held in place by a single screw. It has to be at the correct angle for the mechanical linkage to work. When I first did it, only the electric window release worked properly. I had to loosen the screw and adjust the angle until the liftgate handle lock worked correctly.

So, I received this rear gate actuator on June 15th. I installed it on July 1st. The actuator is the exact fit for my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Very easy install. The hardest part is removing the gate trim. The actuator worked great for 2 weeks. However, now it only locks but doesn’t unlock. I was going to return it for a replacement but I noticed that I missed the 30 day Amazon return policy for these items by one day. Like home water heaters; they start leaking the day after your warranty expires! Now I’m out of $75 and manually unlocking the gate by crawling from the back seat. ….
