    This shift fork was replaced at same time as vacuum actuator (which tends to be destroyed removing the installed one). After installation (quite a few videos available on You Tube), my shifting from 2H to 4H has been fixed. The plastic pices on my original shift fork had about 2 mm of slop (from wear and the new one was very snug / very little play) and I do believe the vacuum acumulator was leaking around the perimeter seal. Dormans also sells the vacuum acumulator. 2000 F150 4X4 now going into 4WD properly.

    This is kind of a niche product, but it works perfectly, and wasn’t nearly as much trouble to replace as I imagined it would be.

    I bought this for my 2003 F150. For a couple of years now, it has been slow shifting into (and out of) 4WD. It finally got annoying this past winter when my sister got it stuck in the snow in her driveway. I finally did some research and found that the “Center Axle Disconnect” is a weak point in the 4WD system. The passenger side front drive axle is made in 2 pieces, splined at their ends. This shift fork slides a collar over the mating ends, locking them together.

    The problem is that the plastic “ears” on the fork break off, and then the fork can’t grip the collar to slide it back and forth.

    I am fairly handy and have a decent collection of hand tools. This project took me about 2 hours to complete.

    1) Jack up front passenger side of truck and secure with jackstand
    2) Remove passenger side front wheel
    3) Remove passenger side sway bar link from lower control arm
    4) Remove the 6 bolts retaining the CV joint to the axle end
    5) Remove skid plate, if equipped
    6) Remove the plastic splash guard/oil deflector (3 bolts)
    7) Remove the 4 bolts attaching the passenger side axle to the axle housing
    8) Remove the E-clip and rotate the vacuum motor 90 degrees and wiggle it out of its mounting hole. Secure it out of the way
    9) Remove vent hose from top of axle and secure out of the way
    10) Remove the single large bolt above the passenger side axle housing
    11) Pull the passenger side axle housing down and away from the main axle housing. Be cautious here, as there may be loose parts. If the stub axle tries to come with, try to wiggle it loose and push it back home.
    12) You may be dealing with some loose parts now. There is a thrust washer between the axles. Don’t lose it. Make note of the orientation of the collar.
    13) Clean any debris out of the cavity.
    14) The fork is easier to remove than it appears. Gently drive the protruding pin in with a small hammer and pin punch. Eventually, the pin will come free of the shaft, but remain in the fork.
    15) Slide out the pivot pin and remove the fork, noting the orientation of the fork. It looks like it would work either way, but I made sure that the markings matched the one I removed
    16) Replace the O-ring on the pivot shaft with the one from the kit
    17) Slide the shift fork fingers into the channel on the collar, and slide the whole assembly into the main axle housing
    18) Using the new roll pin, align the fork on the pivot shaft and gently drive it in until approximately 1/8″ remains protruding
    19) Install the thrust washer
    20) The kit includes a snap ring for the right side axle. Mine looked fine after 185,000 miles, but I replaced it with the new one anyway.
    21) Remove any remaining gasket material from the groove on the axle housing and replace with an RTV sealant which is compatible with gear lube
    22) From this point, assembly is the reverse of disassembly
