The pump fits, and hooks up perfectly, but as soon as it started pumping fuel it shot a 5 inch long fountain of gasoline out of the fuel bowl vent of my carburetor. I thought maybe the needle was stuck open, or the float had sunk in my carburetor, but I had replaced both of those not too long ago. I pulled the needle out and inspected it, then put it back in and set the float level about as low as possible. It stopped shooting gas out of the bowl vent, but I noticed that my car was running a lot richer than normal, even with the idle adjustment screws turned all the way in. I noticed that the fuel pressure was about 9psi, which is definitely too high for a standard 4160 style Holley on a street driven engine. Other reviews have mentioned high fuel pressure, and I am leaving this review to reiterate that this is definitely an issue with this product. I like the fact that this pump has the filter housing connected to it, but I really wish there was a way to adjust the output pressure.

This mechanical fuel pump is listed on the Delphi website as the correct fuel pump for 1965 mustang. Maximum fuel pressure for this pump is listed on the Delphi website is 7psi. Required fuel pressure according to the Ford service manual is 5.5psi. When I installed this pump it made 10 psi of pressure at the feed line, and the car will stall every time you touch the fuel because there’s so much pressure it blows way too much fuel out of the boosters, it’s also idling rich because the pressure is pushing too much fuel into the carb. Driving the car is even worse because of all the fuel getting pushed past the needle. One I got the pump installed it was past the return period, so I called Delphi and was basically told they are having all kinds of problems with these pumps making too much pressure since Covid and hopefully they can trouble shoot the next batch. Do not buy. I replaced this one with a Carter M4009 that did the same thing. When I called Carter they told me basically that sucks, carry a fire extinguisher and buy another one, the sooner the bad ones get off the shelf the better. So I wouldn’t waste my money on a Carter either.

Purchased for my 65 Mustang. Fit well and works perfectly.

It went in easy and pumps fuel just like it’s supposed to. Even though the picture shows it upside down I think you’ll be better off installing it with the fuel filter below the pump. 🙂

This fuel pump was installed on a 1965 Ford Fairlane Sport Coupe with a 289.
It is the correct mechanical pump for this year/model car.
Installed easily and works like the original.
