If this think holds up, I should have done it years ago. My old 2000 7.3 was always slow to start but lately it had gotten worse, I needed to cycle the glow plugs when it was 65 degrees! This beast spins it over way faster then I have ever seen an old 7.3 spin. Best of all, it starts right up within a second or two, no glow plugs. I am loving it. I did have to grind a small bit away on a cross member to get it to swing into place. Once it’s in, it’s no problem. I guess you could also jack the motor up on one side and get it in, but it was much quicker to grind 1/4″ off from the cross member. lol Bottom line is this is what Ford should have put in from the beginning. Starts amazing! (Update – Had to replace, however, not sure if it was my fault or design issue. This has only 2 bolts to hold it in. OEM has 3. Top bolt came loose (due to torque?) while bottom bolt stayed tight. Resulting in tab for bottom bolt breaking. Not sure I had the top bolt tight enough due to location. Will double check this time after a few months and again in a year. Still give it 5 stars, this thing spins my old 7.3 fast and it starts right up. Great deal! If you have an old 7.3, BUY THIS NOW!

Starter works well fit with out any modifications and spins the very fast this 7.3 has never started so easy now just have to see how long it last

No problem installing it on my ’00 4wd Super Duty Diesel, slid right in with no grinding necessary. A lot of people have asked about how fast this starter cranks the engine. I will not guess how much faster it is but when I started it the first time after installation it spun the engine over so fast that if I didn’t know better I would have said it was being bench tested instead of actually turning over the motor. Long cranks are no longer a problem even on the cooler mornings we’ve been experiencing. In the past I would start plugging in the block heater when the temps reached into the 40’s overnight. This morning it was 39 and no starting issues It looks like a quality piece that I can hopefully forget about for the next 10 years or so.

My previous review from above is from the purchase of this same starter 5 years ago. I have another SDD now that I recently purchased and the starter laid down on me over the weekend. No problem I thought as I had good luck with the last one I purchased so I ordered another one. My experience was somewhat different this time; it was no where close to fitting the application. It weighed about 3 times as much as the last one I bought and was several inches longer causing it to hit the frame cross member long before getting it in place. Can I cut a big chunk out of the frame to make it fit? Yes. Am I going to? No. I’m guessing Amazon gets these from several different vendors, some of them have a small frame starter, some of them have this tank of a starter. If you get the small one you’re in luck, it’ll fit right in with no problems, if you get the big one. . . . well, how much effort do you want to go to to make it fit? See photo for comparison.

Purchased this from DB Electric on Dec 22, 2022. I installed it on my 2002 F250 7.3l on June 25 2023. Worked great when it worked , then on Dec 18 2023 it started to act up, not starting on the first turn of the key. Thought it was the batteries (which were bad) but the starter still wouldn’t turn over the engine. Then stopped all together on Jan 14 2024. Checked and replaced the relay, just a click, click, click, dead Doesn’t click or clank now.. just dead silence!! It may have good torque but if it doesn’t last 20 years like OEM, much less 12 months , it’s worthless junk !! Cost of junk DB starter plus tow to the shop plus shop charge to replace = waste of my time and money.

I have a 99.5 7.3 f250. Has the two mounting holes everyone said, looks the same as everyone said. No body mods were needed (no grinding). To put it in, unplug batteries for sure. I first attached the wires and then put it in. The large positive wire has a prong that needs to be flattened. Someone said that they caused a fire on their truck. Just make sure that prong that is on your large red wire is straightened and not touching the body of the starter. I may have broken it off. Cant remember, but I remember it was too close to the body of the starter for comfort and I modified it further with a pair of pliers. Anyway, attach the wires, then put it in. Top bolt I got in using a 6in and a deep socket (maybe I added a 3in extension too?), going over the top of the starter. Took seconds. Snug up (not tighten) your bottom bolt first so you don’t drop the starter on your face. When you’re done with the top, then do the bottom. I used blue HF loctite.

How it works. It’s been 3 months and no problems. I had a slow slow crank for the past few years, I knew it wasn’t the batteries, but in the winter my truck wouldn’t even try to start, it would blow white smoke, etc. Since installing this thing, 30deg Ga weather isn’t a problem. Give a chance for the glows to warm up (about two mins) once or twice and give her a crank. I hold the key maybe 1 second before it starts right up. I can’t say all will be this consistent, and maybe mine won’t (got the warranty too), but for now it’s been great. I’d recommend over the old style starter. Also, you may end up with the unreliability issue everyone is talking about if you get the old style starter, why not upgrade if you’re going to deal with the issues anyway? Gimme that thumbs up if you like this. K bye.

Wow!!!! My OEM starter died and I ordered this one up. My 7.3 Ford PS never turned over so fast. I cannot comment on longevity, but even if it fails after the first year, I would definitely buy again. As for fit up – I had to do some minor grinding to the cross member, not very difficult though. Maybe 5 minutes worth. Installed on 2003 F-350 crew cab long box, 4×4 automatic. Cannot say if other applications would require this mod, but on mine it did. Also had to slightly modify the power connection by clipping the tab and straightening out the connection to allow it to fit properly.
If I had to do it again, would I? IN A HEARTBEAT!!!
If you need a starter, I would recommend to anyone, just beware that there are some modifications required as noted above. Aside from that, the fitment is perfect, requires no shims, and best of all – it works great! Sounds like it’s turning over a little 4 cylinder engine with no sparks plugs installed.

This started is incredible. Besides being inexpensive, it spins my 7.3 over MUCH faster than the stock starter ever did. Bigger than stock due to being a gear reduction unit so a bit of wrestling to get in ( no grinding ) and the wires have to be connected pretty much blind, but it didn’t take too long and there were no surprises aside from how powerful this starter is. Like everyone else, I started by replacing batteries, then the solenoid ( no change ) and then UPGRADED to this starter. Stock starter did last 22 years though. Time will tell with this one.
I would not hesitate to do it again.

Muy bien, hace mejor su trabajo que el original tiene más torque y velocidad, el único detalle es que es un poco más grande y hay que hacer modificaciones al chasis del vehículo

Edit: Still working good several months in, however, when it is really cold it (-35) it doesn’t want to go the first time, I think spins but doesn’t engage forward and hit the flywheel, only on the first crank, which I’m guessing loosens it up enough that it engages the flywheel on the second crank. This has only happened twice and both -30 or colder.

Seems to be working fine so far, been about a month. Clearance was really tight getting it in but it just fit… sounded weird at first but normal after about a week. turns a bit faster than my old one I think, which was much smaller.

This starter rolls my 7.3 diesel at almost idle rpm when starting. No more cold start issues! PCM voltage only drops to 10 volts or so when rolling the starter. In the cold weather here in northern Ontario, Canada, my old OEM starter dropped PCM to 8 volts during starting which doesn’t maintain a ‘PCM keep alive’ minimum of 9 volts.. although the old starter may have been half burned out considering the current it needed to roll the engine over. My only criticism is that the solenoid activation connection is a small flatbar with a Phillips screw in it. This needs to be a proper connection post. Other than that, this thing ROCKS!
