- Replacement part number: 68164627AA.
- Temperature monitoring: Monitor the temperature of the engine coolant to ensure that the engine is running within the optimal temperature range.
- Material: Coolant temperature sensor is made of high-quality brass and nylon. Nylon is lightweight, wear-resistant, has good insulation, and is not easy to break; brass is durable, corrosion-resistant, and has a long service life.
- Overheating Protection: If the coolant temperature sensor detects that the engine is overheating, it can trigger a warning light on the dashboard or even put the engine into reduced power mode (limp mode) to prevent damage.
- Engine cooling: When the sensor detects that the engine is overheating, it sends a signal to the sensor to activate cooling components to dissipate heat and reduce the coolant temperature.

Replaced the coolant temperature sending unit when servicing my cooling system. Immediately started getting cooling system fault codes, my digital temp gauge would fluctuate from -5 degrees (its 70 degrees here) to a more accurate reading then to just — degrees.. After troubleshooting the issue I figured the only reasonable explanation is a faulty coolant temp sending unit. I went an paid $66 for one from the dealership, installed it, cleared my codes and test ran my vehicle. No more fault codes. Upon closer inspection I found that the plastic portion that is crimped on to the brass sending unit just spins in the crimp, severing the connection between the sending unit and the wiring harness plug. Save yourself some time and headache and buy factory or at least a better known aftermarket part like Dorman.

This cleared the check engine light on my wife’s Jeep, not the thermostat. Two things: there are two different sensors that look very similiar–are in fact almost impossible to distinguish from one another. Both have similar nomenclatures as well, so bear in mind this is the sensor that is located near the back of the block; you know, the one that’s not too easy to reach. The other thing is you will have to either remove the front fender altogether or loosen both the fender and its undercarriage to the degree that you can reach your arm through to extract the old one and tighten down the new one. Otherwise, the part is fine; as soon as I replaced the sensor and turned the ignition, the check engine light disappeared.
