Used to replace a bad coil on my riding lawnmower with a Briggs engine. Used a Youtube video as reference for installation. Straight forward job for those with basic mechanical ability.

exact replacement for original on my 18hp briggs 2 cylinder from 1987. saved me making an engine swap or searching for used parts.

My first clue that something wasn’t right was when I had so much trouble getting the gap between the coil and the flywheel set perfectly to get any spark at all. Most normal magneto coils are somewhat forgiving, but this one wanted to be REALLY close before giving any spark. After adjusting down the spark plug gaps from 0.030 to 0.025 I was finally able to get my engine to run. Not ideal, but hey, it worked, and I was ready to start my big project on the next dry weekend.
But alas, after just a couple of weeks, I went to use the engine and it wouldn’t start at all. I disassembled and re-checked everything, but couldn’t get any spark at all. So, instead of completing my project, I was off to the Briggs & Stratton dealer an hour away for a genuine part for $80, which worked perfectly. Normally I’m happy to give ‘off-brand’ a try and still often do to save money, but in this case it was a bad decision.
If you decide to take the risk and buy after reading this, be sure to install and verify the part works well before your return window ends. I was a bit slow so I ended up eating the cost of the coil. Don’t be like me.
