I installed this in an old 6V Jeep using a voltage step-up unit. Needed to shield the wire coming from the coil, as the static created by the copper-core spark plug wires would interfere with the signal. Shielded the wire in a length of copper tubing (icemaker tubing for a refrigerator).

EDIT 2/11/2016 – You can very easily mount this in a 2 5/8 standard Auto Meter gauge panel. Remove the back cup off by unscrewing the hex head screw, pass the gauge through the panel, now using a slightly longer screw, secure the cup to the gauge. This will press up against the back of the panel just like the U shaped strap does on a regular gauge. Worked perfect.

Even though my car has a 6 volt system, (neg gnd), It does an excellent job, although it seems to want to “warm up” when initially starting the engine.
The car is a 1930 Ford Model A “Fordor”, converted to neg gnd, so accessories do not have to be “floated”.

It’s been installed on my ‘65 pickup for almost a year now and works great. It only took a few minutes to install, and the lower rpm readout makes it easier to read and more useful on my truck that isn’t meant to go over 2400 rpm for very long.
