I wish I would have found this stuff years ago. It always seemed to be a trade off between puncture resistance, waterproofing and comfort. Pick two. This stuff pretty much waterproofs any boot. It’s recommended for leather, but not split leather or suede. I used it on leather and on split leather. The split leather warning is that it will darken the leather considerably. Since these are for hiking and exploring, I did not care if they were darker.
1) Clean the boot. They must be dirt and dust free. After cleaning, wait for the boot to completely dry.
2) Heat the boot to 120 degrees. This part was a pain. I used a blow dryer, but the boot cooled pretty fast. They also suggest putting the boot in an oven. Try *that* with the wife or GF home! So I spot heated the boot. This worked well – the idea is for the sno-seal to melt on contact and penetrate the leather. What also worked was coating the boot, then heating it. You could actually watch the stuff get sucked into the leather.
3) Apply sno-seal to the warm boot. Or do what I did and apply first then heat.
OK, they suggest using a lint free cloth to apply the stuff. I used my bare hands. This way I was able to apply it to the seams, all spots of the tongue – everywhere. On my split leather boots I did two coats – and they are totally waterproof! I dunked a boot in a sink full of water – the water beads right off.
On split and non-sealed leather, this will darken the leather quite a bit – how much? Splash some water on the untreated boot and let it soak in. That’s about the color you’ll have after sealing it. For the winter, this also keeps salt from penetrating the leather – no more white lines of salt. I also made sure to apply it to the hardware and heat it. The eyelets, etc. all have a coating – this helps prevent corrosion.
For leather boots that are sealed / finished, one application works great – and it requires very little – maybe 5% for a pair. For split leather boots, I used about 15% of the product.
It’s a great product and does what it states!

I just don’t do 5 stars, since there are so few perfect products. I’m thinking this is one of them. Waterproof just about any leather you choose with a natural beeswax product that will not damage your leather or stitching on those favorite boots/shoes of yours. Salt damaged leather boots & shoes will be a thing of the past. This stuff works best on brand new leather boots & shoes (dry and very clean). Otherwise, make sure the leather is very clean and dry. Dry mens leaving it go for 2 days, not a couple hours. If you trap moisture in the leather, it can cause rot.
A few important tips tho. 1) I suggest you follow the guidance of GENTLY heating the leather product to be treated until its pretty warm to the touch. THEN apply the Sno-Seal with your fingers. The warm leather will instantly melt the Sno-Seal and it will be absorbed well into the leather. Some have said to apply the product and then apply heat. It does not seem to penetrate the leather as well. GOOD instructions are available online and included on the package. Follow them for best results 2) Beeswax will DARKEN leather. So be prepared. It darkens the leather significantly. Brown will be dark brown. Tan will be brown. 3) The 7 oz package I received is sealed in plastic. Like a shrink wrapped item would be. In my hast I cut the plastic at the top, and peeled it off thinking the product label was covered by the plastic. NOT. The plastic IS the label. Doohh! That should have cost a star. LOL So you need to carefully slit the plastic around the lid so you can unscrew the lid and leave the packaging intact. Otherwise like me you are left with a clear plastic tub of product with no info. 4) Instructions are to “apply liberally” and keep doing so until no more is absorbed. This stuff goes a long way. Then just wipe off any excess and set them aside to “cure”. When you are done, you will think you did something wrong. Even after wiping the surface still seems damp and sticky? No worries. Give it a couple days to fully cure, wiping them down every day and you will be fine. My son-in-law lightly waterproofed his favorite light gloves. Worked well, but did darken the tan leather.
