Once I figured out which way to put this on – and removed protective steel plate – it wasn’t too hard to replace. I was quoted $700 to replace my gear shift cable. I had a temporary fix with zip ties and then weed eater nylon. It’s kind of ridiculous it was 30 dollars but compared to alternatives of being stranded periodically when temp fixes broke or paying a shop to do it, no question it was a bargain. Tried watching video but couldn’t see which way device needed to face when attaching. The little cuts on one end make a difference. Once you get on, loose cable pops into place and stays snug. Not sure if I needed lubricant but I used. Makes me think I’ve been getting ripped off for years by mechanics. Thank you internets and Amazon.

Fit perfect on my 2005 Nissan Xterra. Gf was in a parking lot when old one failed and she couldn’t shift at all. I got under the car with her manning the brake and I manually put it in park then drive so she could get it home. If your xterra is 15 years old and hasn’t broke yet you should probably go ahead and do this. Only negative is it shouldn’t cost 30$ for a dime size piece of rubber. But hopefully it will now last the life of the car.

I got this particular product partly because I saw a YouTube video of an APDTY guy fixing a same year/model Titan as mine that had the exact same problem where nothing happened when I went to shift out of park except for the shifter moving a little too freely. Following his instructions, I popped off the center console and saw that, sure enough, the transmission linkage cable was no longer seated where it should’ve been, and all that was left of the old bushing was a small piece still in place that crumbled as soon as I touched it. I hoped that was all that was wrong with mine, and came here to buy this. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I’m quite sure that to get this fix by any mechanic, it would’ve cost me at least triple what this was in price of the product plus my time to install it. Instead, I was able to get the part and have the truck running again in less than 36 hours from the time I discovered the problem. I do have to say that working to get the new bushing in place was a bit of a challenge. It’s one time I think it was good that I’m a woman because smaller hands can get around in the confined area better. Unfortunately, the video didn’t have a good shot of how to use the tool to put the bushing in, and there were no instructions included, but it wasn’t rocket science, and a tiny flat-head screwdriver helped me finally get it seated. Two minutes later, and I was changing gears again, doing my happy dance in the driver’s seat. Thank you, thank you, thank you APDTY for not only doing the video but also for making only the bushing itself available so that I didn’t have to buy the entire cable. I’m thrilled and relieved!

When the shift cable end pops off the shifter stud, it feels like there is nothing there. You immediately think “uh-oh” I’ve just broken the shift cable. After carefully ripping apart the console you see the fastener is gone and the cable end is loose. A Dealor will likely charge well over $100 for a new cable but this simple fix seems faster, easier and cheaper! The new soft & pliable bushing easily pops into the cable eye once lubed up and its simple to push it back onto its ridge headed stud on the shifter. It was a great solution but the nickel sized bushing seemed a tad pricey…

as advertised. install took about 15 minutes. no tools needed. shifter cover pops off easily start from back one (cup holder), pop it off. move to shifter cover next, pop back up 1st then work way towards dash til it’s loose all the way around. twist shift knob counter clockwise to remove. slide cover up off shift knob stick and set to side. now pull off silver metal cable clamp by lifting it up so the cable will pull up another 6-8 inches for easier access. install the bushing on the cable using the tool that comes with it, get it started then use your thumb to finish snapping it into place. grease the metal knob on the shifter with supply that comes with your bushing. slide cable back down and fasten metal clip you removed earlier. make sure parking brake is on, vehicle off, move shifter to line up with cable, press cable bushing on to shifter using thumb. make sure shifter is moving cable to all positions and back to park. put front shifter cover back on, snap into place. put rear cover (cup holder) back on, snap into place. put shift knob back on and twist down tight into place. all done.

Installation tool did not work. Price seems high for small plastic bushing but appears to be standard market price. I used a small bolt and nut with fender washers on each side larger than shift cable eye. Bushing is slotted and tapered to center itself in eye. Tightened nut on bolt and it worked as a press to get bushing almost through and in place. Finished inserting by pressing on washer with thumbs. Worked great.
