This little piece of aluminum is pretty awesome. The hook-n-loop backing pad holds your sandpaper or whatever it is you’re are using quite well. The aluminum appears to be billet, which means it should last a good long while and stand up to a lot of abuse. The extra mass means it will maintain an added bit of momentum and not get bogged down while sanding. All-in-all, this is a great addition to any sander/angle grinder.

Used this along with a set of diamond polishing pads I used to grind out some haze in my woodstove ceramic front glass.
On the angle grinder, it couldn’t hold the pad on center after a few minutes of use. With the pad used it didn’t seem to affect performance at all, but thought it was worth a mention. When I used it on a cordless drill with far less torque and fewer rpm, it held the pad where it was placed.
Honestly, I didn’t have enough patience to keep using this rigid backing plate because it seemed like I was going to have to resurface the entire piece of ceramic and not just target the really bad spots, and that was taking longer than I cared to wait on that freezy cold night when all I really wanted was a nice toasty fire blazing away.
I got the 4” size so it could be used on either of my angle grinders. One can handle up to 5”/~125mm attachments and the other up to 4.5”/~115mm. Seems solidly constructed/machined out of a nice chunk of 6061? billet. Hopefully the hook material is epoxied on with some super tough stuff so folks can get many years of use out it. Haven’t priced out similar items to have a sense of its performance/value

A semi-rigid backer is my usual choice, but there are plenty of times I want more control of the surface, and want it as flat as possible. For that I want a truly flat and rigid backer. Sturdy and precision flat; this aluminum backer really fits the bill. The velcro seems strong and well made.

On the first run I was pleased to see that the backer plate was perfectly balanced. This is not always the case with rubber pads. Most of my sand and buffing will be at much lower rpm’s but the initial test showed no vibration at the top speed of the angle grinder.
It was great for polishing a counter top with a Scotch-Brite pad. The velcro held firm for polishing and for high speed spinning to dry the pad. The rigid flat surface of the backer pad made it easy to keep even pressure on the surface. I expect this to also be my first choice for other flat surface sanding.
I have treated the backer pad with care so as not to risk bending the disc. The little extra care is worth the additional performance that this adds to my grinder arsenal.
Stone Table Studio –
This is a quality backing bad for polishing stone and other hard materials where you don’t want flexing to cause ripples or low spots. I brought it up to full speed with no pad to check for vibration and there was none. It has a firmly installed brass threaded bushing (harder and more durable than just aluminum threads), the Velcro has good grip and showed no signs of detachment, like some cheaper pads after running through a full set of diamond disks on granite. Overall a good backing pad to have.
