Needing a new air filter for my 2015 Subaru Forester, I decided to order the CA9997 replacement engine air filter from AirTechnik, one of Amazon’s newest vendors. The air filter I received looked just like the one in my car except the one in my car was too dirty for a true comparison. Since air filters sitting on a shelf before use don’t deteriorate with time like used ones do, I decided to buy a new highly respected branded air filter to compare it to. Putting the two together on my workbench, I initially saw no difference. The AirTechnik filter’s pleats were just as numerous and similarly spaced. Its plastic frame was identical making me wonder if it came from the same factory. Looking closer, however, I saw one notable difference. The protective gasket around the branded filter was made of felt whereas AirTechnik’s filter was rimmed with a soft plastic gasket. I’m not sure how significant this difference is except that the soft plastic gasket should provide a better air seal which would result in most of the air coming through the intake being directed through the filter rather than around it.
I don’t see any reason for not buying engine air filters from AirTechnik if it represents a cost savings. Except for the difference noted, one that may be more cosmetic than practical, the AirTechnik filter is a direct replacement for the Subaru 2.5-liter engine air filters I normally buy.

I have a 2015 Subaru Forester. This engine filter seems to be almost identical to the engine filter used by my mechanic shop, and the fit is perfect. I like how this MSRP is only a fraction of that for the OEM engine filter. The replacement is so easy that everyone can do it. It’s literally just taking out the old one and putting in the new one. This is one of the things that mechanic shops over-charge us for. I recommend everyone to replace these filters themselves to save money.

Filtering media appears to be high quality; there are significant number of pleats that are all evenly spaced and neatly aligned; the fiber in the media is tightly bound, there are no points of weakness and no over-applied glue anywhere. The plastic frame is solid, and the piece fit into my ’16 Outback 2.5 engine air filter housing neatly with no fitment issues. The only imperfection, a small manufacturing defect, is on the “dirty” side of the filter in the valley of the plastic frame edge, where the black surface resin / treatment did not entirely cover the white plastic frame material underneath. It looks like the surface treatment was either sprayed on or dipped in, and did not entirely cover the tiny crevices in the edge. I don’t believe this impacts the performance of the air filter in anyway, since being on the “dirty” side it doesn’t form any part of the airtight seal in the airbox.

I like to replace my air filters every 6000 miles or so and have used several over the years. This one is very similar to the OEM filter and seems like it should work just as well. I have had it installed for a couple of months and have not noticed any issues since installing it. The OEM filters have gotten a bit pricey so its nice to find similar filters at a more affordable price. I have had an issue with a different brand where the plastic was weak and actually broke during install, but this brand installed just fine, so I am happy with it and would recommend it.

Save yourself a bundle and change your own air filter. If you have had a filter change at a dealership or professional garage you know it can add up. Granted the mechanics who keep us on the road deserve a fair pay for their valuable expertise but air filters and cabin air filters are user-friendly enough that you can do it in a couple minutes without having to travel, wait and fight traffic to change them. I personally think it’s good to get under the hood of your car every so often especially if you don’t do your own mechanics. Washer fluid, air filters, oil checks and the like keep you aware of what’s going on in the part of your car most never see otherwise. The only issue about doing these hands-on little jobs is getting the right part and Amazon makes it simple for you. And this is a top notch filter.
