After looking around locally for a replacement starter for my 1990 Jeep Wrangler with the 4.2 engine, I realized it would have to be shipped in anyway, they wanted a core deposit, and the cost was still high. I purchased this starter for twenty bucks less than I could get it locally. The quality is excellent and it installed without issue. Starting is quiet and turnover is quick. I have no reservations about recommending this unit.

La instale en una Cherokee XJ 1989, le quedó muy bien, se ve de muy buena calidad, como suele ser AC DELCO, también funciona muy bien. Con el tiempo veremos su durabilidad.

Went right in fit perfect for my 91 jeep Comanche. Works Great!

Fit 1999 XJ fine, moved connector from old starter to new starter post. No splicing needed. Docked a star for a loose motor bolt on the new starter

Fairly simple replacement if you have enough clearance under the vehicle *and* the appropriate sockets.
Two 15mm bolts (some say 14mm?) holding it in place, one 13mm nut (1/2 inch was slightly too small for mine) and one 5/16 nut that both hold a wire harness connector. There’s a third nut but it doesn’t need to be removed because it’s just a wire that attaches to the starter itself. Sockets that bend and extensions are helpful, as it’s a little tight. I actually changed mine on my 4.0L 1998 Jeep Cherokee without jacking up the vehicle, but it was barely enough room to reasonably do it.
There are a couple of good videos on YouTube: “Jeep Cherokee Starter Replace” (posted in August 2014, 4:25 long) and “Jeep Cherokee Starter Replacement” (posted in Jan 2015, 5:06 long)
I bought an Amazon Warehouse Deal “used” one (looked brand new) for just about half price. Worked fine, although I have no idea if AC Delco will continue to work for the many years that the original one did.
Hope this helps at least a couple people. Good luck!

Correct fit for 1998 Jeep TJ Wrangler 6 CYL 4.0. Appears to be a genuine ACDelco. I must admit I was apprehensive about using a ACDelco (GM) replacement part on my Jeep Mopar. Fear not, perfect fit for above Jeep 4.0. I went from slow starting; chug, chug, chug, chug, chug-vroom. To chug-vroom. Replaced (4) slow chugs with one fast chug then vroom.

Works well on my 1997 Wrangler TJ

DOES NOT WORK FOR 1993 JEEP WRANGLER 4.0L. does not attach to flywheel to engage. Please avoid.

This starter works great. It appears high quality and I could notice how fast it spins when I compare to another Jeep I have. Most importantly, this starter is about 3 inches longer than the Remy reman I had bought the same day that this arrived via UPS. I had bought a Remy as I needed the Jeep and this ACDelco hadn’t arrived yet. By the time I got home, this was sitting in the garage. I compared the two and the ACDelco was longer and appeared better made, although I did not disassemble it of course. I complained to the parts house where I bought the Remy about the size difference and was told the Remy was in the book for all the 89′ to 01′ Jeeps with the 4.0. That is disappointing how they made it cheaper by lowering the quality. I’d buy this ACDelco again next time I need a starter.
