Seemed like oem but got flashing passlock light on dash. Switched back to original and no passlock light

2005 Chevy Colorado. Erratic problems starting. Finally, nothing happened when I turned the key. This part fit perfectly. Was NOT easy to change, not the fault of the part, just the design. 4 hours total to remove and reinstall. One bolt holding it to the steering shaft was some sort of security bolt with no head on it. Had to use locking pliers and do a 1/8th of a turn at a time. Replaced that with a real bolt upon reinstall. Anyway, everything was fixed. I had to follow the “security relearn” procedure afterwards to get the engine to start. Key on, 10 minutes, wait for security light to go out, Key off, 10 seconds, key back on, try to start engine, repeat if doesn’t start. Mine took 2 tries, I have heard it can be 1-3 times.

If you’re having issues starting your truck – having to turn you key on and off multiple times to finally get it to turn over and run, it’s usually this part. If you don’t feel like replacing the entire part – requiring the removal of the steering wheel, airbag, etc., you can swap the black electronic part that’s bad with only a few screws. Much easier.
1. Take the plastic shroud off of the steering column.
2. Unscrew the two screws in the old black plastic piece on the left side of the part
3. Turn the key to ACC
4. Remove the black plastic electrical piece and unplug it
5. Push the detent and remove the key+tumbler from the existing
6. Slide key and tumbler into the new part
7. Remove the black piece as detailed above
8. Swap, plug back in and replace the tumbler + key
9. Re-train the security by doing the following (thanks to a fellow reviewer below):
Step 1 – Attempt to start the vehicle. It will crank, but not run. The security light will be flashing on and off. Leave the key in the ‘run’ position for exactly 10 minutes, then the security light will stay solid or go off.
Step 2 – Turn the key to the ‘off’ position for 10 seconds. Attempt to start the vehicle. Some vehicles will run at this point, although many will require you repeat repeat Step 1 two more times. Make sure turn the key to the ‘off’ position for 10 seconds before each 10 minute cycle.
Step 3 – The vehicle is now ready to relearn the proper code. Turn the key ‘off’ for 10 seconds and then ‘crank’ the vehicle. It should be running now. The security light might stay on solid for several minutes afterwards, depending on your system.
What To Do If This Doesn’t Work
In the even that reprogramming / resetting your Passlock or Passkey VATS system doesn’t work, you could try repeating the procedure; but most likely you’ll need to replace your ignition switch. In some cases the problem could be caused by your BCM (body control module) or poor wire connections (they tend to corrode after a few years, they’re not gold plated – bad move GM).

2010 Colorado. When I would accidentally leave the door open when trying to start I would get locked out for 10 minutes. Then last week it happened with the door closed but the window was open (maybe coincidence?). After determined searching I found this and decided it was worth the gamble. I too replaced only the switch and not the entire housing. I went through the relearning process but it didn’t work. I searched and found similar instructions but no good. I put it aside for a couple of days. Today I tried again and it cranked (improvement) but did not start (felt like fuel lockout, which had never happened before). After trying the procedure a few more times it finally started, thank God! I was ready to go for more drastic measures. I programmed my other keys (after it starts, turn it off, replace the key within 10 seconds and start. Wait until the lock light goes out before shutting off). Now it starts every time (so far) and I can start it with the door open too! Too bad I have a useless housing to throw away, would be nice if the switch were sold separately. Moral: don’t give up right away if you have one of those that is stubborn to relearn. Also, make sure your battery is well charged, I had to put a charger on it eventually.
DIY Grandpa –
It was easy for me to install but would not be for someone without some skills and the tools to work with. Just a suggestion for DIY folks, when trying to remove the airbag from the steering wheel. I used a 1/4 inch ratchet extension to release the clips and not a screwdriver like I have heard of some using. The clips you have to press on to release the airbag are not easy to press with a screwdriver. The extension I used is 6 inches long and worked great. Save yourself about $800 to $1000. Good Luck.

I ordered this ignition switch so that I could replace the electronic portion on my 2012 Chevy Colorado, which has a very common failure of this particular part. I could not buy just the electronic portion, I had to buy the whole switch, but replacing the whole switch requires removal of the steering wheel, something I wanted to avoid. Replacing the electronic portion was easy, lots of videos out there showing how. I changed the part over a month ago and it is working great, no starting issues anymore.
