A tin of quality mink oil usually runs about $12. For just a few bucks more you’re getting two natural horse hair brushes and several cloth applicators and a convenient travel case. Mink oil is by far the best and easiest to apply leather preservative. I’ve also used heated paraffin or bee’s wax on my work boots, and while it works well, it is a bit of a messy process. Not like just dabbing a little mink oil.
The horsehair brushes do a fantastic job of getting in those cracks and crevasses, especially right there where the upper meets the sole. I prefer boar hair as it tends to be slightly stiffer than horse hair, but not every boot needs that level of brushing. Quality set for a great price.

Perfect addition to my Timberlands. Great maintenance kit at a good price.

I am fastidious about taking care of my shoes and boots because I tend to buy expensive ones that I want to last for many years (some of my boots I’ve been wearing for over 15 years!). This is a great little kit for touch ups when I don’t want to drag my “big” shoe care kit (which is in an old vintage shoeshine’s box). The small applicator brush is just the right size and stiffness and the larger polishing brush is soft enough to put a nice matte buff on a pair of natural leather boots after applying the mink oil or Obenauf’s. I personally don’t find the terry pads that useful (they soak up too much oil and I prefer to just use the corner of a towel or old t-shirt). For the price this kit is a great travel kit, starter kit, or something to supplement your box of colored polishes.
