- The four-wheel drive axle actuator housing, sometimes called the axle disconnect housing, is part of the differential that houses the gears and shift fork required to lock both front axles together. The axle actuator housing contains and protects the shift fork, locking collar, and gears. Those moving parts need to be protected from the elements and kept properly lubricated.
- The axle actuator housing is found on the differential. It works together with the transfer case to send torque to all four wheels. The transfer case connects the input from the transmission to the rear and front driveshafts. Most of the time, the vehicle is in rear-wheel drive (RWD). When 4WD is engaged, the transfer case engages the front driveshaft. It’s still necessary, though, to connect the two front constant velocity (CV) axle shafts. This is done via a front differential and the axle a

- Due to its location underneath the vehicle, the axle actuator housing can be exposed to dirt, road salt, and other pieces of road debris. These can damage the actuator housing, which will make it less effective at protecting the moving parts inside. If you try to shift the vehicle into 4WD at speed, the high forces involved might crack the actuator housing. This Assembly fits 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 years.

Have put two of these on my 2005 Chevy trailblazer in the last 7 months. The second one failed today, has only been installed 3 or 4 months, less than 1000 miles and very little use. They were both installed by certified mechanics. So disappointed!!!

Went to use 4 wheel drive and heard a whole lot of crunchy noise from the actuator and couldn’t drive the truck. Had too put it back into 2 wheel drive.

It is a must to open it up and remove the cheap grease and replace it with a good bearing grease and it a must to seal it back up with a sealant I did mine and it works like a $700 part I would recommend this to anyone that doesn’t have money to throw away

As noted in other reviews, the grease is both poor quality and insufficiently applied… but there’s other issues. I’ll first comment that I didn’t receive the disconnect as pictured. The one pictured showed hex-head bolts fastening the assembly together, rather than allen-head bolts like other sellers. But, whether it was due to Chinese vendors, who seem to either copy off one another, or falsify… or I had Prime next-day-shipping, and there was a rush just to give me the closest Chinese made model available… whatever the reason, I received one with allen-head bolts anyway. After disassembling to clean, and apply sufficient, quality grease – well, see photos. I should note that I broke my original disconnect casing while trying to pry it free from the oil-pan housing (fused by corrosion). Hence, I didn’t need internal components. But, to compare quality… there’s two side-by-side photo comparisons… with my original on the left-side. Note in particular gear teeth, and the machined differences in design. Suffice to say, I re-used all of my original internal components (aside the seals and needle bearings). I was ready to install the re-assembled disconnect when I discovered the next issue with the mounting bolts. The disconnect casing has a machined rim around the periphery, but it’s not cut back far enough at the mounting bolt hole locations. This causes the original mounting bolt heads to hang on the rim, which would then cause both torque and alignment issues (see photos). My solution was to grind the integrated washer part of the bolt heads until the diameter was reduced just enough to rest flat on the surface. Now comes the installation… and well, unlike my original, it barely aligned to the mounting studs on the oil-pan housing (meaning, even the drill-holes were slightly off-spec). Next, the operational test. When selecting to any 4-wheel drive mode, the ‘new’ actuator made much more noise than my original. Even worse, it didn’t properly or fully engage. In short, even the actuator motor assembly had an issue… and so I used my original. Finally, after all that… I have a working disconnect… mainly consisting of my original components, and the casing of this ‘new’ one. I don’t know if most are like the one I got… maybe I got a lemon… but, I wouldn’t recommend this product even if you only need the casing.
