The unit has a nice long cord on it so that helps. Didn’t need to use an extension cord. They do not recommend using an extension cord.

Works great…. left it on for a month and the battery holds more voltage then before!

The backstory is that I apparently own a truck where there’s a stupid rubber plug on the brake pedal that can crumble apart in time, close the brake light circuit, and allow the battery to completely drain down to a measured 0V as the truck sits for a weeks with brake lights on. The side story is that the battery had just gone out of warranty, and the replacement plug costs $10 friggin’ bucks and took an hour to install. But that’s not important here…er, not completely important.

After reading a fair amount of comparison shopping for battery tenders/chargers (there’s a difference apparently!), I opted for the BatteryMINDer 1500 for a few reasons: 1) needed the desulfator function, 2) costs, and 3) general function/capability. My biggest concern was that any charger I chose wouldn’t even do anything for me because of how low the voltage was (no seriously, 0V!). Most chargers either made it clear that voltages less than 10V wouldn’t charge.

The instructions for the 1500 indicated that it needed at least 3.5V. Hoping for the best, I connected the battery to my other truck (i.e., battery on ground, jumper cables to it), and let the truck run for a while. Eventually I got it just north of 3.5V after maybe 45-60 mins. At that point, I hooked it up to the 1500 and let it do it’s initialization cycle. Shortly after, it indicated it was charging/desulfating.

I let it sit for a few days, checking the voltage daily. It did in fact charge it up to over 13.5V after about 6 days, I think. Since I don’t drive the truck daily, the time was fine, but I was more pleased that it was even able to charge and that I hadn’t killed it. We’re talking about a battery that sees maybe 300 miles a year, was already 2 years old, used in AZ, and otherwise sits in a truck on the side of the house only used for truck-requiring errands. I’m pleased that it saved me from buying a new battery for an old truck that’s rarely driven, and the cost of the unit was acceptable even if for only a 1-time use. Right now I’ve got it charging another battery…for another truck that’s been sitting idle lately.

Package includes the charger unit, ample cord length, detachable battery clips, and a screw/spacer for “permanent” mounting (it replaces the screw on your outlet cover). The LEDs are easy to understand, each LED indicating one of two functions clearly shown on the unit’s label.

I’d recommend the unit if you’re in a similar situation. I may even keep the unit hooked up to the truck when not in use.

Not my normal review, because I just wanted to drop a quick note before I forget to review this like I have so many times.

I’ve purchased two of these BatteryMinders – one in 2014 and one in 2016.

In the winter of 2017, my wife’s battery on her Infiniti was going bad. There were a few mornings that she needed a jump in order to get to work. I sensed her battery was on its last leg because it was starting to slow crank as well. BTW, I maintain my vehicle batteries at least once a year by checking the electrolyte level and filling with distilled water as necessary after the battery is fully charged.

I knew of the so called desulfating properties of this BatteryMinder, so one weekend I connected this to her battery and left it on the entire weekend.

I should’ve replaced that battery, but the BatteryMinder made her battery strong again – I couldn’t see why I should replace a ‘perfectly good’ battery. Craziest thing I’ve ever seen. Additionally, every few months, I would just connect the BatteryMinder to her SUV battery just for ‘maintenance’.

That was back in the Winter of 2017 and I finally got around to replacing that battery back on May 30, 2034. *ALMOST 7 YEARS LATER AFTER THAT BATTERY WAS GOING BAD!*

I felt I could’ve just kept doing what I was doing, but I felt I was just pushing the envelope for a battery & frankly I was just being too frugal.

The BatteryMinder is an absolutely great investment to extend battery life.

Excellent Battery Tender/Maintainer and decent battery charger. While this charger will only do 1.5amps, it can reliably charge just about any large battery, deeply discharged or not if given enough time. Just remember, 1.5amp = 1.5 amps per hour so at a minimum, a 50AH battery could take over 24 hours to charge from a completely discharged state (less than 11V). The biggest benefit/feature of this charger is to inexpensively desulfate and maintain your batteries. Yes batteries because you can buy a Y splitter and maintain multiple batteries at a time. It’s great that they’ve included onboard temperature compensation as the previous low cost battery minder chargers didn’t have such a feature, making this the ultimate low cost battery charger/tender/desulfator on the market today.

I’ve had great experience with the BatteryMINDer brand of chargers. Though it can’t recover every single bad battery you come across, for those that it can recover, it does an excellent job. I have the original battery in a 2004 Volvo S60 that is located in the trunk, so it’s not exposed to much heat, and thanks to this charger, I was able to recover it. The car spends most of its time parked so what must have happened was the plates got heavily sulfated due it spending extended periods of time in a state of discharge. The battery after a full charge would reach 12.7v which indicates a healthy battery but after using the headlights for about 30s to remove the surface charge, the battery would revert to 11.9V which indicates an unhealthy battery. The car would crank over fine but knowing that the battery didn’t have much reserve capacity was worrisome. So after about 3 months with the batteryminder tending to the battery, the battery in this car now has a much healthier resting voltage of 12.5V, a major increase in reserve capacity.

Update: Took the BatteryMINDer 1500 off a car I was tending (the one I mentioned with a resting voltage of 12.5v) to use it on another car battery that needed some work. Came back a month later, and I saw that instead of a 12.5V resting voltage, it now has a 12.65v resting voltage, despite the parasitic load! So I guess the battery has improved to the point to where the reserve capacity is like new again. The charger had been tending to this car for about a year now but having that improvement from 12.5V to 12.65 means I’ve got 94% of the battery’s original reserve capacity.

I have a lot of small and large batteries to keep alive. In Ontario we have wide range of temperatures through the seasons and if batteries aren’t baking in the summer they are freezing in the winter. These are my favourite battery maintainers. I started using the older version of these which where 3 times the weight and twice as thick, I love them and was worried the new version may not be as good but These newer models seem to be just as good and whether or not the new temp sensor does anything to help or not is beyond me but they work really well.
