My husband has an antique family heirloom with leather on the handle. Following the advice of a museum website, he bought neatsfoot oil to help preserve it. He said it worked well, and he liked the product. It didn’t require much, so we have a lot left over now! I guess we need to search for other uses.

Great for conditioning my leather bicycle saddle. Eliminated an annoying squeak caused by the leather rubbing on the metal supports.

Huge bottle. I bought a little one to pour this into as carrying around this giant bottle is only asking for me to spill it everywhere. Add a little dawn dish soap in to emulsify the oil and it’s perfect for hide tanning. Makes my rabbit pelts so soft and supple. Easy to work.

Neatsfoot oil is great. There is a reason it has such a loyal fan base and has been popular for 100 years. It works. I’m using this oil to condition the horse hide leather on my strop block. The horse hide is just a little too firm. The leather on a strop block needs to deform slightly when the knife blade is pulled across it. Neatsfoot oil softened the horse hide leather just enough, but it did take several applications. I subtracted one star because the valve cap on the bottle always drips and runs down the side. Not a big deal, but it is annoying to have to clean the bottle after every use.

I used this on a holster I recently purchased in hopes that it would soften the leather and darken the color. It did both and I was pleased with the finished result. The photos I’ve submitted show the before and after effects of using the Neatsfoot oil.
