After an engine swap and adding a MSD 6AL to a G-Body Elky I didn’t have a convenient or aesthetically pleasing spot to put my blaster coil (tube style). But I found this and was able to mount it to the firewall very easily and it gave me plenty of room for engine torque and looks beautiful on a freshly painted firewall. Plus the distributor wire needs less length and isn’t bundled up. Time will tell on longevity.

This coil can’t be beaten fore quality as is all the msd range of ignitionsfair price fore very powerful cool .you don’t want a shock from this one

I purchased this to solve a problem I was having on my 87 Plymouth which has been swapped to an HEI style ignition and has the ballast resistor removed. The constant full 12V to the oil-style cannister coil was cooking the it and causing the car to flat out die when it got too hot (about 30-40 minutes of run time). These Blaster SS coils are a great solution for guys like me who put an HEI style ignition where an HEI has no earthly business being (like on a Mopar or Jeep or Ford). Takes the full 12V in stride and pumps out great power to the distributor. Made my car start, idle and run much better. A plus was the small size and easy mounting options for the coil itself, and the high quality terminals (brass, brass, BRASS) are a God-send. It’s made in China but it’s made to better specs than a cheap eBay coil. If you’re running an HEI or Ford TFI swapped into something that never had it, do yourself a favor and grab a Blaster SS. This will work with or without an MSD Ignition control box. In my case, I have 12V going to the coil, and hot and ground wires going from the coil to the HEI – that’s it (well also the coil wire to the distributor cap). Very pleased with the design and quality of this product, and it did what I needed it to do. The only thing I cannot speak to at this point is longevity and reliability, as I only have about two hours/20 miles on it. If it is as reliable and durable as it looks, I think I’ll be ok.

even after 40 years of using MSD products (anyone remember the 404B & BE), that the simple change from using a perfectly good MSD 8202 coil on the MSD-6 to this 8207 would make ANY difference on a stock-ish motor. Hum-baby, was I wrong. Scientifically obtained evidence? My Honda consistently used to start after 4 compression strokes of the crank (5 if it was cold) — I took this to be normal, as many/most ’96-on motors need to turn over a few times for the computer to locate #1 cylinder with absolute certainty. The first start with the new coil installed (no other changes, and the car having sat unused for over a week) was barely 2 compression strokes. In utter disbelief, I shut it off after less than a minute, then started it again after a 2-minute wait — with the same results; results that continue to this day: 2 compression strokes, and it’s lit. Your favorite will be the “how long can you hold the plug wire” test: I can no longer hold the business end of the spark plug wire more for more than 1 z-z-ztrike before I’m tossed across the garage. This combo throwz zome lightning… and may explain my erratic behavior after 40 years of testing ignitions. (Oh, did I mention that they are Nology capacitor wires?) And yes, it was a couple of days before I could type again — but I figure all that shock therapy is good for my depression. (PS: further noteworthy all-RPM engine smoothness and seat-of-the-pants performance gains have persisted with the addition of the Bosch 4-ground electrode spark plugs. I’ve never really been a big fan of Bosch’s plugs, but they may have a winner with these, especially in a multi-spark environment. A variation of them can be found as the stock plug on BMW, whose coil warning sticker about “Lethal Voltages Present” I have heeded without question OR curiosity. Trust me n… n… now?)

I’ve gone through about 6 of these in the 3 years of owning my pickup. Recently the whole ignition system has friend and I’m looking to get an updated version. My dad had the whole system installed at a shop before I bought it so I’m sure it’s the products fault. Make sure to have a few of these on hand too, everyone keeps buying replacements so the stores are usually out.

  6. J. Pruett

I added this to my aging 2JZ-GE coil that was hooked up to a Digital 6 Plus ignition. High RPMs produced a smoother rev, don’t know if it really added power. IF I just guessed I’d say 1HP. Didn’t dyno test it and that’s such a small number a temperature variance that could effect the dyno. hah!

I had to use the included wire crimper and socket to fit to my system. Have someone help you if you’ve never done it before.

It’s worth the upgrade for the price.

  7. Dan

I used this to replace a 15 year old Jacobs Ultra Coil trying to troubleshoot an stuttering problem on my Dodge Dakota. It didn’t’ fix the issue as it turned out to be mechanical, not ignition related. Not a fault of the coil. It’s small size and easy to mount and works just fine with my 6AL ignition I am using. I can’t say it made any different in power or gas mileage over the old coil but then again I wasn’t expecting it to either.

  8. LDV

bought this to use with my new msd box and it works great. Gives such a strong spark that it will hurt you if you’re not safe. Been running it for a while now and no problems.

  9. Amazon Customer

Was very impressed on how fast I received it, very easy to install, and I’m amazed home much more responsive my throttle is now. I’m running it on my mud truck it’s a 80’s ford Bronco with 460 big block.

  10. Dale

I like this design more that the old school Blaster 2 I had. It looks better, takes up less space and performs great. Includes the boot to adapt your coil wire as needed. You can also trim the wire to length at that time, so as to not waste ignition energy in a longer than necessary wire. Just buy a cheap crimper here and you’ll be on your way, I got it perfect on the first try!

Mounted unit to firewall. Unit comes with rubber vibration isolators.
