Previously had an OPTIMA yellow top that worked for me for over 10 years, didn’t give me any issues up to the point it could no longer hold a charge. But given I had that battery for longer than most people own their cars, I was extremely impressed with it…so much so, I decided to replace it with another OPTIMA battery! The red top may not be able to handle as deep a current drain (the yellow tops are deep cycle batteries), but I never really needed that capacity and a red top suits my application just fine…I just want the reliability and performance that I could count on in the cold freezing Canadian winters! My yellow top never let me down, and I expect the red top to perform just as well!

Died withing 6 months, installed on a Factory Five Roadster with a battery disconnect, driven maybe 5X in that time, battery tender on a timer was installed. Left it about a week without a tender – dead flat. I charged it up, and it would not ever take less than 2A charging. Battery voltage after 3 days of charging was 11v, figured I had an internal fault and reached out to Optima for help.
They entirely blew me off, said “sounds like sulfation, sulfation is normal, warranty is up to the retailer”. So, a “high end” $270 “spiral wound” battery crapped the bed in under 9 months and the manufacturer says “happens, not my problem”. Luckily Amazon understands customer service and sent a replacement. Five star Amazon experience, zero stars for Optima.
So, I’ve been buying car batteries for maybe 40 years, and across my fleet I probably buy 2 or 3 a year. This was the first and last Optima I will ever buy – Not only will I boycott the brand but I will badmouth their horrible support to every racer, gearhead, weekend warrior, car enthusiast and offroader I come across until the end of my days. Garbage product (maybe I got a dud to be fair) with Garbage support. I may Fedex the defective product I got to their CEO with a copy of this review as a wakeup call to fire their support policy makers. I’ve never had even a cheapie battery die this quick, and even the Chinese knockoff battery vendors stand up to their warranties!
I would have honestly been OK with just getting a discount on a replacement because stuff happens and we are headed to a recession – but they just told me to pound sand. Optima is dead to me now.
UPDATE: replacement that Amazon sent died at 12 months and 2 weeks. Garbage product, stay away.

I ordered this battery (34/78 Red Top) for use in my ’66 Ford Bronco. I needed a battery with more ooomph than a standard battery. The battery was extremely well packaged for shipment. There was more than enough protection to prevent the battery from being damaged. The battery was charged up. It comes with a top plate, though I did not need it for my application. The price on the battery was excellent, though it’s likely due to a couple of considerations. First, the battery is covered by a warranty. However, it’s going to be more complicated to handle it than if you purchase it from a local dealer. Warranty on the battery involves shipping and waiting. That is not likely a good option for someone using their vehicle on a daily basis. On a part-time vehicle, that won’t be a problem. And then there is the hassle of disposing of the failed battery which you are replacing. So plan on a trip to your local hazardous waste recycling facility. Or at least to a nearby auto parts dealer – hoping they will just take it off of your hands. After installation, my Bronco started right up. It’s been a couple of months now, and no problems or hiccups. But with all batteries, the real test is time. I am hoping to get several years of service out of this battery. Shipping was faster than they indicated, though not 2-day Prime. Overall, a good purchase on an accurately described item. Note: The price of the battery varies considerably. I chose the lower priced battery with a slightly extended shipping time.

I recently installed the OPTIMA Batteries 8004-003 34/78 RedTop Starting Battery in my vehicle, and the experience has been outstanding. This battery isn’t just a replacement part; it’s a significant upgrade, offering exceptional power and reliability that goes beyond standard car batteries.
The first thing I noticed was the RedTop’s impressive starting power. It delivers strong and consistent cranking power, which is especially noticeable in cold weather when my previous batteries struggled. This reliable starting power gives me confidence, knowing that my vehicle will start smoothly every time, regardless of the weather conditions.
Another standout feature is the battery’s durability. The OPTIMA RedTop is designed to withstand harsh conditions, including vibrations and impact that would typically shorten the lifespan of regular batteries. This toughness is crucial for me, as I often drive in challenging environments where a robust battery is essential.
The maintenance-free aspect of the RedTop battery is a significant plus. It’s a fit-and-forget solution, which is perfect for someone like me who prefers a hassle-free car maintenance experience. The sealed design means there’s no need to worry about checking water levels or dealing with leaks and corrosion.
The versatility of the OPTIMA RedTop battery is also commendable. It fits a wide range of vehicles, including cars, trucks, and SUVs. This compatibility, combined with its exceptional performance, makes it a suitable choice for various automotive applications, from daily commuting to more demanding driving conditions.
The design of the battery, with its distinctive red top and clean, modern lines, adds an aesthetic appeal under the hood. While looks might not be the primary concern for a car battery, it’s a nice bonus, adding a touch of style to the engine bay.
TL;DR: The OPTIMA Batteries 8004-003 34/78 RedTop Starting Battery is a standout choice for any vehicle owner seeking power, durability, and reliability. Its impressive starting power, rugged construction, maintenance-free design, and versatility make it a superior option compared to standard batteries. This battery isn’t just a component; it’s a key to a worry-free and powerful driving experience.

Over the last 20 years I have fully used 2 of these batteries so on average lasted 10 years each. I just installed the 3rd one. The battery arrived almost fully charged and only took 15 – 20 minutes to top off at 2 amps on AGM setting. Less then 30 minute job, battery fully installed and charged. Nice!! will buy again in 2034 or so : – )
