I am now a mechanic! The 2001 Ford Ranger again smoothly runs! I think I will take a victory lap or two to relish the smooth runing 3 liter 6 cylinder engine. For less than $40 and 30 minutes of my time I got the truck running again. This effort resulted in a savings of hundreds of dollars (many hundreds) from the quote Christian Brothers provided to me. So simple. Order part from Amazon (saving $80 from the dealership price) receive in two days. Open hood, disconnect battery, remove 3 bolts on the installed coil (after using a Marks-A-Lot to number the plug wires), remove wires. Spray on more mosquito repellent. Open box, place new coil where the old one was and bolt down with the removed bolts. Insert the plug wires according to the markings. Connect the positive clamp to the battery. Start engine – and see the “Check Engine” light is now no longer glowing. Engine in running smoothly and all is right (for the time being) in the world. This is not rocket surgery. You can do it.

Now for another day – I bought new plug wires and spark plugs. Christian Brothers wanted to replace them – said they were old. And indeed they are old – but on 37,213 miles on the truck. I thought the plugs would be good for at least 50,000. Nevertheless – I bought wires and plugs on Amazon saving a pretty penny over local parts stores. By doing this (buying on Amazon and installing myself) I am going to save around $1,000! Replacing a coil – like falling off a log. Replacing the SP Wires – well a bit of contortion, but no skill required. Replacing the plugs – more contortion, right tools needed, and a bit of time. These steps are not anything but talking off and putting back on. One does not need to know anything about how a gasoline engine works or how to adjust it. This is really nothing more than changing a flat tire.

Don’t get ripped off as I was going to be until I told them NO.

Give a try and enjoy your success and newly found money.

Standard motor products has always been a quality ignition / electrical automotive part supplier and this coil is no exception. Very easy to install on Ford F-150 4.2L engine. Coil is located on passenger side valve cover with 3 bolts easy access and 1 electrical harness connector to undo. This standard coil is an exact replacement to the Ford OEM coil and costs a little less than half the price of a Ford Motorcraft coil. Can’t beat the price or the quality of this coil.

Defective part, pretty much by design. Unfortunately, it took me a couple of months to find this out.So I doubt I could return it.
I got a cylinder two misfire code, so first fix was replacing the ignition coil. I placed this in, and it did NOT fix the problem. So I figured I would leave it in seeing the one I removed was the 9 year old factory original and was probably ready to go. So I went on a trek to solve the problem, replacing several things in the process, starting with minor fixes to major. After three months, the problem got severely worse, with extreme bucking…so I threw my hands up in the air and brought my truck to Ford. The problem? The ignition coil. They put in a Motocraft and it works fine, solved all problems, telling me that aftermarket parts usually don’t work well on their vehicles…So my question to the aftermarket companies…WHY ARE YOU MAKING THEM? The fact that this part isn’t designed to properly work is a severe defect that cost me much more money than needed.

So the problem was the original Motocraft crapping out after 9 years. If I had just replaced it with something that worked…namely the factory part…my problem would have been solved immediately. I’ll spend the extra 50 bucks for a part that works as it should instead of a 35 dollar part that shouldn’t be sold in the first place.

My 05 Ranger had a very rough idle and would be hard to start, was not noticeable when moving just stopped and idling. Tried fuel filter, new plugs, new plug wires; finally I replaced the OE coil pack with this Standard Motor Products coil pack.

Perfect fit, simple to install just 3 8mm head bolts. Be sure to number spark plugs wire to replace them in exact position.

Local parts stores, Advance, Auto Zone, O’Riellys wanted $75 to $85 for a coil pack from manufacturers without the historical excellence of Standard Motor Products.

This ignition coil pack works great in my 2002 Ford Windstar. I installed it myself along with new plugs and wires (also purchased on Amazon) a few months ago and it’s still running smoothly without any issues. Definitely recommend it and, at the time I purchased it, it was substantially cheaper than anywhere else so that’s a plus. If I ever have any issues I’ll update this review.

[Update 2/15/2020] I recently sold the van and the coil pack was still working fine, but since I don’t have it anymore can’t give any more updates on how well it holds up.

I had no maintenance history on this car because we purchased it with 138K miles for my mother in law who had totaled her 05 Oldsmobile (not her fault) We knew she wouldn’t be driving much longer, maybe a year, so we didn’t want to put a lot of money into a newer model.

It presented with a 301 misfire code (cylinder 1) at 148K miles. The car had been running smoothly up until that point so I was amazed to find Original Equipment plugs in the engine. Their gaps were huge! I installed new plugs, expecting the problem to be fixed, but alas nothing ever works first time in my world!

Further diagnosis revealed the coil pack to be the culprit. I purchased the lowest cost one with decent reviews. The ($34) Standard Motor Products FD-498T did the trick. It arrived in two days (on a Sunday no less); packaged perfectly; identical in weight and form with the original. I slapped it on in 10 minutes; a very easy job anyone can do. Just mark your wire positions prior to disconnecting the old coil pack.

The car has never run better. Gas mileage improved 3-4mpg…. and I “woulda” replaced the plugs anyway!
