I installed mine on a 2000 4Runner. The installation instructions didn’t follow my application but if you just examine it before you rip into it, no problem. On this installation you remove an upper and a lower E clip on each strut then remove. They will go flying when you remove them. Had to go to the hardware store to replace one that disappeared. BTW the E clips are metric. Take one to the store to get correct size and pickup a few extras for the install as they are less than 40 cents each. I’m glad I did.

Order two sets of these for a 2001 and a 2002 3rd gen 4runner. They perform great. The lift gate almost opens by itself and in the full open, the strut holds firm. Installation took about 15 minutes for each vehicle. The bushings were cracked and crumbling where the top of the strut is installed. I bought a pair of .328 x 1/2” x 1/2” nylon spacers at a local hardware store to replace the old bushings. The spacers worked perfectly. I can’t say if these struts will work on a tailgate with a ladder attached to it. My tailgates do not have ladders. This is a great product for what I needed. Very happy with the end result

Installed these with my wife in under 5 minutes. Had only watched a quick little video on YouTube. It’s not difficult at all. As someone else mentioned, careful when removing C clips so you don’t have them fall into hard-to-reach parts of the car.
Function is flawless. I open it maybe 5 inches and the struts take over and do the rest beautifully. Such a satisfying sound and thing to watch lol. Fully extends to the top and is sturdy as hell. My previous struts needed to go, cus they were not lifting the tail gate anymore at all. They’d hold wherever I lifted to, but the automated part was long gone. These StrongArms are a gem. Get em!

Ok, wow! These things worked perfectly. Kind of tricky to install but once done they work better then factory so far – at a FRACTION of the cost. Original replacements were upwards of $300, so these were a great option. I did find a YouTube video that reviewed these and they suggested buying nylon spacers at a hardware store to replace the factory spacers because the factory spacers may be damaged when you remove the original part. My spacers were split in half because of the age of the car so I used the nylon spacers but had to cut them in half because the local hardware store didn’t have the correct size, but that was no big deal.
Just an FYI- these things are very strong, the liftgate flies open now and I almost clocked myself not paying attention to how strong these are. I’ve had them installed for several months and they work perfect. Time will tell if cold weather will have an impact on them but we are still in the middle of summer right now. Will update if cold has an impact, but for now this beats having to prop open the liftgate with a stick or paying $300 for original parts.

Great pair of liftgate supports for 3rd gen 4 runner. Shipped in a handy tube and was well packed. Fit perfectly in my 1999 T4R (SR5, but this will fit any variant). OEM fit, and as other reviewer stated, the barrel portion of the piston is a smaller diameter than the stock parts. I think this give a slightly sleeker look, if that matters to you. The power these provide is quite strong and it will lift the gate after you open it about 6 to 8 inches, it will require you to use a some force to get the door shut after the swap. Holds the gate open very well when the rear window is down as well, which was the issue that primarily led to me seeking replacement. I would say the only con of this was that shipping took about 7 days, this is more of me wanting to get this fixed once i sourced a suitable part, that’s just a personality quirk of mine though. However, who can really complain when shipping is free and the product is great.
A couple of install hints:
– have a buddy or use a prop to lift the gate up as far as possible while you are working with these. You can do this with one hand, but its far easier to work with both hands to get the pins, washers, etc in the right place.
– keep a magnet handy for then the snap rings fly off in an unexpected direction, because they tend to do that. I find the best way to solve this is to attach the magnet to the body immediately where the ring releases, so that it catches the part before it jumps wherever its going to jump.
– cover the gaps between the tail lights and the body with some non-marking tape or a rag to keep hardware from falling down between the two If it does, you will have to remove the tail light to retrieve. All in all not a huge deal, but worth noting. Magnet trick will also prevent this…
– My plastic bushings at the top were worn/broken as well, but still usable. It is possible that this is a generic part sold at auto stores that keep a good stock interior and exterior retaining clips for body part like trim or door panels. I would suggest Pep Boys for this. In the event that you misplace or lose a snap ring, you can get those easily at any big box hardware store or at pep boys as well.
– only needed needle nose pliers for install, but a flat head screw driver could accomplish the same thing for removal and reinstall of snap rings.

It’s been less than a year and while these are holding the hatch open better and higher than the original ones (which were 27 years old) they are beginning to sag a bit. I thought maybe it was just the cold weather, but it has warmed up and they haven’t returned to their full potential. 4 stars because I have hope, they were super easy to install, fit perfectly, and again they do a better job than the original, but as it stands their power has dwindled far sooner than I think it should.
