2009 Saturn Outlook – Rear gate would no longer open. This was the problem. Fairly easy to replace – plan about 45 minutes to install it. If your gate is inoperative and you have a manual rear gate you will need to open the door from the inside. There is a round plug/cover near the center bottom of the inside of the tailgate. Remove that cover and use a flashlight to look in. With a screwdriver, you can push the arm that is in there to actuate the latch mechanism and open the door. Once the door is open, remove the trim cover for the handle on the passenger side of the tailgate with a small screwdriver. Next remove the two screws that secure the handle to the tailgate. Then move up to the bottom of the window area you’ll see the bottom tailgate door panel ends and the upper trim for around the window begins. You must pop the upper trim loose from the door panel where it meets the lower door panel – there is a plastic pin (sort of) that ties the upper to the lower panel. To do this, pull the leg of the upper trim toward the middle of the tailgate and it will pop loose. You dont have to remove the whole upper door trim, just snap loose the lower leg on each side to clear the lower door panel. Once that is done, the rest of the lower door panel is simply attached with pop-pins. Use a door panel trim tool or simply pull on the panel to remove. Its a little awkward as it is over your head, so a buddy to help might be useful here. There will be a wiring harness for the tailgate light, unplug that and the lower panel can be removed from the car. Now you can see the wiring for the switch – it will be a small two wire plug – mine was green in color. Un plug the switch wiring and NOTE which side the wiring harness is on the switch in the door. At this point you may be tempted to remove the two screws that secure the switch ‘cove’ to the tailgate – DON’T do that – leave those two 10mm bolts in there. You can just reach up to the top of that cove where the switch is and push down on the switch and it pops out. Almost too easy. Install the new switch by pushing it in from the outside of the 1/2 lowered tailgate. Take your time here and be sure it lines up in the opening properly (i didnt and paid for it). Reconnect the wiring and then test it before installing the inside door panel.

Hard to believe the wires could be any thinner, but the part did last 10 years and the new one is a bargain! When I couldn’t open the hatch I just pulled back the liftgate molding reached down careful not to burn my hand on the light bulbs (or disconnect the battery if you wish or just shut down interior lights…) and disconnect the green plug plug in the new one to release the liftgate then push remove old part it just pops out and the new one pops back in its place put liftgate molding back and it’s done!, almost anyone can do this repair and it doesnt even require any tools!
The Pen Is Mightier –
This product fixed my non-functional exterior lift gate switch. It was a royal PITA to get the fascia off the lift gate enough to where I could reach the electrical connector (There’s a special place in my heart for heavy duty Christmas tree shaped push plugs), but once I could reach and disconnect the old one it was a breeze to pop the new one in. You’ll need some trim sticks to pop the old switch out. My original one had a lead corrode completely apart right at the switch after ~ 9 years. This one has a slightly different wire layout that should hopefully last longer – less strain where the wires meet the switch.
